Interesting takes from The Ringer's only sane guy:

quote:

Unlike their predecessors, the Rockets don’t have a catch-all excuse for their play this season. Chris Paul is hampered by a hamstring injury, and at age 33 has shown subtle signs of decline. Eric Gordon has apparently forgotten how to score. The team isn’t shooting well from 3 and lacks depth at every position. There’s also an unquantifiable sense that this team lacks the supreme confidence and drive it had last season; Houston was single-mindedly focused on knocking off the Warriors last season, only to come up short in Game 7 after missing 27 straight 3s — and the 3-pointer is the shot that defines their analytically driven system. It doesn’t take a lot for doubt to start creeping in.

quote:

There’s a clear starting point to explain the Rockets’ struggles. In a vacuum, Houston’s most significant losses this summer — role players Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute to free agency — pale in comparison to losing a star player, but having dependable role players is a necessary ingredient to the championship recipe. The Rockets still have P.J. Tucker, but of the 1,054 minutes that Tucker shared the floor with center Clint Capela last season, 943 came with at least one of Ariza or Mbah a Moute on the floor. Those minutes that previously went to Ariza and Mbah a Moute have gone to youngsters like Gary Clark and Danuel House, journeymen like James Ennis III, and rusty turnstiles like Carmelo Anthony.

quote:

Opposing teams are giving the Rockets a taste of their own medicine by pick-and-rolling them to death, then exploiting mismatches on switches; the goal is to get the big man away from the rim with a switch because it opens the floodgates to the paint. Teams finish 19.4 percent of their possessions using isolations against Houston—which is the highest frequency in a Synergy Sports database that goes back to the 2004-05 season

quote:

Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta has expressed reservations about diving into the luxury tax unless the team’s a true contender. “If you do win the championship, that’s easy money back,” Fertitta said. “Now, if we are in the luxury tax every year and barely getting in the playoffs and a first-round game is a struggle, I’m going to find me a new general manager.”

D’Antoni and Morey feel Fertitta’s pressure. [ ]

Yea, but losing in the conference Finals will be better without him because they'll still have their integrity since they didn't sell out.

James is a little heavy right now, give him a few more weeks to slim down to size.

I'm confused because Boom gave us this in the summer and now I don't know who to believe:

Good deal for CC. Gives them a 4 year window coinciding w James prime to make a run every year. I say they get 2. Conservatively.

Fertitta said that before the season, during media day, in jest. He wasn’t calling out Morey.

And the Rockets struggles are easy to explain. They lost Anderson, Ariza, Mbah a Moute, and earlier in the season - Nene. And they were replaced with Ennis, who is a meh player, an undrafted rookie in Gary Clark, 19 year old rookie g-leaguer Isaiah Hartenstein, and g-leaguer Danuel House.

Basically replaced 4 competent NBA rotation players with g-league players.

And on top of that Harden and Paul have missed games with injury, and Gordon forgot how to play basketball.

Then even more on top of that, teams have better figured out how to attack the Rockets’ switching defense this year.

They need some help, but they’re still dangerous if they can pull it together, and they’ve shown signs of life that they can.

Baiting only works whenever Boom is in game mode. This season has already deflated him as he tried to hop on the Clippers wagon (and was promptly thrown off by SDV) and sniffed around the Mavs wagon

No he didn’t. You wouldn’t be saying that if CP3 didn’t pull his hamstring in game 6 and the Rockets won the title.

Obviously they didn’t pull it out, but Montrezl Harrell, Patrick Beverley, and Lou Williams aren’t getting you to the promised land or where CP3 got the team to already.

James has had more than one instance where he had a really good season and went into the offseason "satisfied" then came into the next season unfocused and out of shape for him.

The first time he did this was after the WCF run with Dwight Howard where he finished 2nd to Curry in MVP voting. Came into 15-16 out of shape, somewhat injured, Rockets get off to a disastrous start, fire McHale, barely make the playoffs, the rest is history.

I believe that effect is going on again this year and CP knows it and hes low key pissed at Harden. Then you add on the switch defense getting exposed, lack of depth, etc. And you get what we've seen. Hopefully Chris continues to pounce on Harden and gets him refocused.

Harden is about 70% of what he was last year right now IMO. He still has good games offensively, but hes getting waxed defensively and you can tell he runs out of gas a lot when he starts doing the matador on defense while also getting careless with the ball.

Last night's game was a perfect example of where we're at this season. The Rockets crushed Portland with Harden on the bench and Paul running the point alone despite Harden having a fairly efficient offensive game and CP going 2/12.

Lol you were never winning a title with Paul

Now he is washed up and you traded 3 starters. I love how yall are trying to justify Morey getting trade raped when you didnt even need to make the trade

It’s silly to assume that Houston absolutely wins games 6 or 7 with CP3 but it’s also silly to assume they wouldn’t. That’s sports. We’ll never know.

No worries Bubba! He's a fan of the league not individual teams. Plenty of great teams to follow!

he's not in basketball mode yet. It bores him. CC is too good. They'll definitely #runitback. Run back that 2nd place in their conference

He became washed up in the 5 months between his great year and performance in the playoffs and October when the season started?

Also, 3 starters? Lou Williams was a back-up. Montrezl was a back-up. And Beverley was an okay starter.

This is a retarded statement. They won 65 games and were 1 half away from most likely winning the title. You dismissing it with “lol” as if it’s silly to even entertain it as a possibility is retarded. But you actually know better. You’re just trolling.
