When did I discredit that Michael Phelps is dominant?

Horrible anagolgy.

What the frick is an anagolgy?

And it's not a horrible analogy at all... unless you shoot free throws at a higher percentage than Calvin Murphy did.

I bet Phelps's winning percentage is higher than Calvin Murphy's FT% and yet you would still bet on yourself. You sir, are no mathematician.

A lot smarter than you. And I'm not approaching it, I've been there my whole life.

Ooooh, another gay joke!

I guess that's your go-to comeback when logic fails you?

Logic failing him? You make it sound like he ever had logic to begin with. The ad hominem attack is the first, and only, bullet in his gun.

You're right, I stand corrected.

I find Baloo to be one of the top 3 most knowledgeable MSB posters because of his wide range..I always enjoy talking to him...He has proven me wrong before and I admitted I was wrong and vice versa..I enjoy talking to people like that.

Not sure some people on here have ever had a true sports discussion besides..."You don't think my way...you're wrong".

got back from work and found the thread to be in the can. but i fell the need to try and have an educated discussion on the subject.

i must admit i am a tiger homer and slightly biased but still a fan of sports and love a good sports argument. so, here is my take.

certain athletes throughout history have dominated their respective sport, phelps, woods, eric heiden, armstrong, navratilova, federer, ruth, gretzky to name a few. all of these athletes are great and one could argue each one of these athletes is the most dominant. how can you argue that eric heiden is not as dominant as phelps or woods? the guy won gold in all the speed skating races at the 1980 olympics. how can you be more dominant than that? but he was only #48 on ESPN's greatest athlete list.

the question we should be discussing is who is the better sports person. who would rank higher on your list of greatest sports people of all time? forget being an "atlhlete" or who would do better - phelps in golf or tiger in swimming. who would your list consist of? you would certainly put jordan ahead of eric heiden on your list but could argue heiden was more dominant.

now i would rank tiger higher on my list than phelps because tiger completely transcended his sport, he dominates like no one in his sport has done before, he is arguably the most mentally tough athlete in history, and he has a hot wife and makes $100+M per year.

tiger is on his way to being number 1 on my list and many other people's list. imo, phelps will never make the top of this list.

i guess nobody wants to discuss this anymore. maybe after phelps wins 2 golds tonight it will stir it up a bit.

more dominant at their respective sports is phelps. the question cant really take the variables of the harder sport into it. competition may be acceptable and not much is tougher than olympic swimming. tiger dominates and may be the better athlete, but phelps is more dominant at his sport

Interesting posts here but let's put things in perspective - it's golf. You don't train 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, just to walk a mile on the grass with a stick in your hand... Phelps swims a mile in about 15 minutes and puts in 15K to 20K meters a day. True, Woods might be the "Michael Phelps" of golf but again "IT'S STILL GOLF". Woods is as much of an athlete as a pro bass fisherman. If the 200 meter fly or 400 IM were easy, they'd call it golf (or maybe bowling...) Try it sometime (without a life jacket)

no kiddin. the opinions are soooo set, even if phelps completes the sweep, with ALL WORLD RECORDS, it wont matter. The tiger bunch will still stick to their guns . . . . . . . .

golf is waaaay too fickle of a game to be dominated like phelps in swimming. swimming is clear cut, the best swimmer wins every time. golf has too many smaller variables that make huge impacts
