his podcast is horrendous. I really think this guy is overrated by sportsfans who have a backlash against Simmons for being too popular and "easy to read".

I don't like Simmons because he is a moron with dumb theories.

w/e.

Posnanski is sappy and overemotional about virtually every topic he covers. He's like a less formulaic Rick Reilly without the shitty puns.

one thing i don't understand from the excerpts that have been published: if JoePa and Sandusky truly had a bad relationship with one another from day 1 that only deteriorated w/ time, why did they then work together for 30 years w/ promotions along the way?

i mean, the only argument as to why the shower allegations were not treated w/ the seriousness they deserved is "well what would you do if someone accused your good friend of 30 years of that kind of thing?"

hearing this kind of stuff about the JoePa / Sandusky relationship makes the handling of the situation even more difficult to understand.

and i agree, this is absolutely not the right subject for Pos.

Following PSU’s controversial 27-25 last-second loss at Michigan in 2005, the Lions’ only blemish on an 11-1 season, Paterno was furious that officials put a few seconds back on the clock, possibly allowing Wolverines QB Chad Henne enough time to throw the game-winning TD pass on the final play. According to Posnanski, Paterno told friends he was considering pulling the Lions out of the Big Ten as a result.

The amazing thing about this is the possibility of it being a credible bit of hearsay. Think about what that would imply - that a coach had the power to do that on the basis of a single shitty call. Whether or not the PSU BOT was packed with his cronies that implies unmatched individual power at PSU

To me the amazing thing bout that scenerio is JoPa having that much ego to even consider doing it. That he had "unmatched individual power at PSU" is pretty much a given as expressed by the local media over the yrs. I am not sure who had more first hand knowledge of this, the media or the area law enforcement agencies. Reading the excerpts in GQ, probably 5-6 pages worth, there is only one mention by JoPa of the victims & that was just a throwaway line, basically.

I'm skeptical of the suggestion that he couldn't stand Sandusky. If that's the case, why didn't he use the shower incident to nail him to the wall?

Slate Review of Posnanski Book
This is a really good discussion of the author and the subject. There appears to be substantial "unabashed Paterno bias in the book."

False.

I've made this analogy before but Bill Simmons = Coldplay. They are both great at what they do but they both gets tons of hate from people who need to appear "edgy" and "ahead of the curve".

Simmons >>>>> Posnanski

Coldplay >>>>> Japandroids or Black Keys or Muse or whatever band you think is "cool" this year.

There are dumb analogies, but this one takes the cake. What's great about the analogy is that Coldplay is widely seen is watered down Radiohead, but you hold them up as the quintessential rock band. Which sort of makes your analogy show the opposite of what you want it to, albeit unintentionally. Very revealing.

Anwyay. I don't really think Poz and Simmons are going after the same audience, and the world is certainly big enough for the both of them. Simmons is a guy who lives off of dated pop culture references and nostalgia. He's the Family Guy of sportswiters. "Hey, remember this other funny thing?" And if that's your cup of tea, you're welcome to it, and he's a pretty good writer.

Poz writes from a standpoint of empathy. He's really good at trying to get someone else's point of view, even those he disagrees with, or trying to understand the things he doesn't quite get. He's a guy who appreciates things for what they are instead of bemoaning what they aren't. Simmons rips guys for not being winners, Poz asks whether them not winning a title is part of their personality. If that is what makes them interesting. I just think Poz is much more comfortable with nuance and process. And he's a far more generous soul when it comes to accepting people's foibles.

I enjoy both writers, but honestly, Poz is on a different planet. Though I do think this Paterno book will be a black mark on his record -- it's just not the sort of thing he can write. He's not the guy to write about the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. He doesn't do evil. He could meet Satan and write a book about how misunderstood he is.

The largest part of the book is pre Sandusky, tho it does get into the power trip JoPa enjoyed thru out his tenure as HC. I didn't like him back in the 70's when his teams were going undefeated & playing nobodies, yet he was whining bout not having a chance at the NC. He was always a titty baby when he did not get his way, he just got a lot worse as he got older because he always GOT his way. Feel sorry for the family, but as for him, good riddance.

Why did Coldplay cross the road? To get to the middle.

That's one of many jokes about the pedestrian British band who continue to break records and top charts.

Now frontman Chris Martin has acknowledged the criticism that Coldplay are "a sh-t Radiohead" during a gig in London.

He was playing an intimate charity gig with guitarist Jonny Buckland when Martin made the concession (via Gigwise): "We had to settle on being sh-t Radiohead. We're called that sometimes, you know."

Anyway, I don't plan on reading the Paterno book. It's probably a friendly bio of Paterno at the precise moment no one wants to hear it. Poz had 750,000 reasons to write it, but it's just too different of a book of what it was supposed to be when he started.

I just finished the book I thought it was a great read, nothing really earth shattering revealed but a nice look behind the scenes of a national travesty. I've never been a JoPa fan but this is a compelling read.

Jo fired Sandusky as def coor and dashed his dreams of ever being head coach at PSU and, I think, prevented him from getting hired anywhere else. They also apparently kept and eye on him, and he stopped molesting years ago. They did not want him to go somewhere else, start molesting, and have it come back to PSU. A friend (I know) up there tells me that folks think PSU actually gave money to a few victims.

Of course, they should have been aggressive in reporting all this to the popo and and immediately and completely disassociated the university from him. There would have been a black eye, but Jo would have stayed and now would have a complete and wonderful legacy...he would be revered for the way he handled it and prevented some further molestations.
