You're right. I remember seeing him on the old Game of the Week, and the announcers saying he was grandfathered in when they mandated helmets.
Also, a lot of catchers wore those flap free helmets behind the plate.

I think getting hit in the ear hole would lead to some brain trauma. I wwas meaning temple/ear hole synonymous, there is an ear hole in the helmets that's why I said that.

Alex Cobb got hit by a line drive, hitting his ear flap.

Yamamoto got hit recently too.

We grew up among Men & Giants, gentlemen. I was 5, but instantly recognized Joe Garagiola & Curt Gowdy, Yaz’s sweet left hook, and a drunken gnome sliding into a giant Beer Stein.

this reminds me of how switch hitters back in the day would wear the helmets with double ear flaps.

That stance was something.

I used to wear a KC Royals batting helmet everywhere I went as a kid, circa 1978. So much so that my mom got tired of it and hid it from me.

I wasn't criticizing your point at all. Just laughing about how f'n bad it hurts to get hit in the ear in any situation.
