Agreed on both counts.

What did you think of my alternative scenario … I promise I didn’t have any peyote before coming up with it … about him being big enough to spearhead an old-school alternative to NASCAR if he got sick of the direction they were going?

That only worked when Big Bill, Bill Jr. (who I submit was more important than his daddy in the thing’s growth) were in charge. You know, the adults in the room.

When they handed it to Bri guy, all bets were off.

Who else would be in your top five? Junior Johnson would have to be in mine, then it gets tough.

Earnhardt
Petty
Pearson
Yarborough
Johnson

Wouldn’t argue if someone had Junior Johnson, Gordon, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison and maybe even Kyle Busch in theirs.

Mine matches your’s except I would have Jeff Gordon 4th. Yarborough would be just outside my top 5.

That’s a good group. I think Lee Petty would have to be a contender … he wasn’t just Richard’s daddy, he was friggin’ GOOD and was as willing as Earnhardt to move you out of the way … along with Smoke and, going way back, Herb Thomas.

If you put a gun to my head, mine in alphabetical order would be Earnhardt Sr., Jimmie and Junior Johnson, Pearson and R. Petty.

I’d have to go Earnhardt, Petty, Jimmie
Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Bobby Allison.

Petty and Jimmie should be above Gordon.

I'll give you Jimmie and Gordon are pretty much even, but they are both better than Petty.

Richard has more $$$ and ran more races than everyone else back then, thus, he won more. If Pearson & the Wood Brothers had had the finances that the Petty's did he'd of won 300 races and 8-10 titles.

I was 15, in my bedroom watching the race... when Helton announced his death I cried like a fool... even had family members and friends calling saying they were sorry

I was a massive fan of his growing up... had his pic and autograph on the wall... terrible day

Was on the driveway with my parents listening to the race on the radio.

Thats the most surprising part, my parents couldn't give a shite about nascar yet we were all listening.

Something else about David … I of course never saw it with my own eyes, but I heard it from enough of the old-school writers to where I believe it sufficiently to repeat it … ain’t nobody in NASCAR history, not even Tim Richmond, who got more tail than the Silver Fox over the years. In fact, someone actually used the antiquated word “cocksman” to describe him. Take that as you will.
