As a Rangers fan as well, I kind of want Upton but afraid of the package it's going to take given he only has a year left on his deal. I would think some combo of Profar, Luke Jackson, and one of Nick Williams/Lewis Brinson should get the job done.

Another thing to consider is Markakis is on the wrong side of 30. We know what his ceiling is by now. Heyward is only 25. Who knows what his ceiling is? My opinion is that Heyward will be a monster in StL. It will always puzzle me as to why we didn't at least try to approach him with a deal. I don't know whether to blame Wren for that crappy 2 year deal last year or Hart for not attempting to extend him this year.

“He wanted a two-year deal and wasn’t interested in a long-term extension unless the dollars were maybe beyond where the club certainly wanted to go. We had a strong feeling he was going to go on the market. That’s what he wanted to do. We wanted to protect ourselves and position ourselves better. If we elect, next year, to be one of 30 [teams] that compete for Jason on the market then that’s what we’ll do.”

When he saw Freeman sign his contract, he was licking his chops. It boils down to we weren't ready to pay him a premium price which he felt like he deserved. There was just a lot of risk and it was a tough position to be in. If his numbers didn't improve offensively, that contract could have been crippling.

Convenient to leave defense out of your comparison.

Dude, you responded to me and even quoted me when I said equal offense

If you read my post again, I clearly said better pitching, equal offense, and shitter defense.

The offense was already horrendous and it is likely going to be worse if Bethancourt gets 500ish ABs.

Even if you say "equal" it is hard for me to see a team with an offense as bad as ours competing at any kind of respectable level.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Of course it will get worse if he's getting that many at bats, he's not a good hitter right now.

But right now, he's not set to get 500 at bats. So I think our offense is comparable to last year, which doesn't mean it's good. But it's still comparable.

I think a guy who has proven he is elite in other areas (base running and defense in this case) is someone you don't have to worry about being a crippling contract. He is a guy who is likely going to be a 3-6 WAR guy every year through his prime even if he doesn't improve offensively. That's someone I'm definitely okay with having on my team. That's just me though.

Yea... not for a 150+ million dollar contract extension. I disagree. I'm not paying that amount for elite defense and good base running skills. That's insane and a big gamble.
