Should be a good one. Just don't think we'll see him until June at the earliest.

I don't understand why anyone would want to do a complete rebuild... especially talking about a 3 year one. This team does not need that. We have a great foundation with our pitching and all we need is some timely/consistent hitting to seriously compete. It's not like the Giants have been operating with some powerhouse offenses while they've been winning pennants.

People are still in sour grapes mode because we traded away Heyward. Get over it and move on. Maybe it'll help some off y'all to become more objective regarding the state of the franchise.

Could not agree more. It hasn't been a "sexy" offseason by any means, but I think these moves have been extremely solid. Let's build around the rotation and focus on getting rid of the offensive philosophy which has lead to record K rates at the plate.

Hart and Coppy are doing good things. And believe it or not, can have the team competing next year.

Biggest question I have right now is who plays 2nd.

Both nailed it. It seems pretty obvious we are going to the San Francisco model of solid pitching and timely, contact hitting, with decent defense.

Let's not forget that we have Freeman coming into his prime, a solid defensive shortstop, and solid defensive catcher. If we get an ace for Justin Upton (which we no doubt should) then we have a young rotation with potentially 2 of the top 10 pitchers in baseball within 3 years.

Whats missing from that solid core is a great defensive Centerfielder and solid corner outfielder who can hit in the 4 hole. 3rd base and 2nd base at that point can be filled with journeymen or prospects.

Nope, Who's on first...what's on 2nd.

I disagree. What about CF? What about LF? What about 3B? We have a ton of holes. If we have a Gattis, BJ, and Markakis outfield, it will be hard to watch. We can find someone to play second until Peraza comes up.

There is still time obviously. We will need to move BJ, JUp, and Gattis and hopefully get a couple outfielders somewhere.

There is literally no offense on this team outside of Freeman and Gattis (who will likely be the worst defensive player in the majors if he plays 120+ in LF) assuming we trade J Up.

Not sure how people expect to compete if you are entering a season with Gosselin, Simmons, Bethancourt, Johnson and whoever our CF filling out 5 of the 8 spots in the lineup.

Yeah, totally agree. Offense will be Padres terrible. I have come to terms with losing JUp assuming we get a nice return. I just hope we can move Gattis and BJ too somehow. I think we will see a lot of movement next week during Winter Meetings. Maybe Hart can make the right moves to put together a good enough lineup to compete next year. It would be hard to imagine competing on a high level though. Mediocrity still seems like a ceiling more than a floor.

Right now?

Upton in Left
BJ in center/possibly Bonafacio again.
CJ at 3rd.

We can't speculate on the roster in the future because no other moves have been made and we don't know what type of return we would get in any trade.

But the moves so far have been solid. With the rotation we are putting in place, our offense doesn't have to be spectacular. And at this moment in time, we have a better staff than we did last year, an equal offense, and worse defense (although RF is one of the least important defensive positions anyways).

We'll judge this roster more when more moves are made. Right now, I don't get all the bitching.

I agree here. We'll know a lot more by the end of next week.

Anyways, I'm more worried about about turning it around in Moneyball.

an equal offense,

I disagree here.

Replacing Gattis with Bethancourt is a big downgrade.

I said at this moment in time.

With the roster configuration right now, Bethancourt isn't behind the plate.

Once Upton gets traded and its confirmed Gattis is moving to left permanently, then we can re-judge based on the Upton return.

Ok, that's fine if you don't want to speculate but let's assume for a moment you get a guy like Walker as the centerpiece for Upton.

Gattis/Markakis/Bethancourt is worse than Upton/Heyward/Gattis in all facets except catcher defense.

Sure your starting staff is improved on paper, but when it takes worsening 3 of your 8 every day positions it is tough for me to see the team improving 10 games which is what's needed to make the playoffs.

Markakis = Heyward right now, comparable in almost every offensive statistic.

Main difference is Markakis is a shite ton more consistent and can hit LHP, while Heyward can get it done on the base paths.

They signed Markakis to make the market that much slimmer meaning the haul they'll get for Upton will be that much greater.

The Braves FO is a bunch of geniuses.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: Lester decision unlikely before winter meetings.

All three clubs have a need for a powerful outfielder, so it will be interesting to see where the bidding goes. It’s unclear if the Braves are targeting a specific position in return.

I don't see any way he ends up in ATL.

I'm surprised at that list of teams that the Mariners aren't listed. I say we trade Upton to Baltimore and let Adam Jones reunite with his buddy Markakis

Convenient to leave defense out of your comparison.
