What’s the most you’d pay Charlie for one more year? $10?

Damn, I had no idea Chipper straight up torched our entire hitting approach like that this year.

A lot of flexibility without a ton of clear holes outside of SS imo.

I think C is a sneaky hole. TDA is trending down with age, but still an ok #2 option who has been thrust into a pseudo #1 role due to Murphy's injuries and overall poor performance.

It may be a hole but way too much invested in Murphy to not give him at least the first half to bounce back. I was moreso talking about what will be addressed this offseason.

Not sure if you mean $10 million or actually just $10.

He no doubt has some value as a veteran innings eater, I think the Braves would be better off putting that money toward a number 2-3 starter in case Strider doesn’t come back 100 percent or Sale can’t stay healthy.

There's zero value in that for someone who is 41 years old.

10 million. Not sure how I left that off.

If we see Acuna or Strider before July we are stupid. The Braves will make the playoffs next year just like everyone knew we’d make it this year. All that matters is October. This October neither Sale nor Fried showed up and none of our bats.

Riley, Álbies, Olsen, and Murphy will put up better numbers and we’ll be fine next year. Let Acuna and Strider recover for a long time. We don’t need them the first half of the season. Heck, I’m the guy who said we shouldn’t pitch Sale until the playoffs last off season because of his injury risk. I was proven right. The Phillies are just better than us right now and next year. But, if we get healthy when it matters we can compete with anyone but we gotta be smart about games that don’t matter.

If Morton wants to continue playing next season, even at age 41, I would say there would be a few teams willing to pay something for his services. So there is more than “zero value”.

Obviously his age carries added risk of decline and combined with near zero upside.

I thought Charlie Morton and Snitker would both hang it up after the season. Both could totally walk away with their heads held high.

2024 was not a bad season for Charlie. He really just returned to the mean after a good 2023 season preceded by a bad 2022 season. This is the guy who was a human pincushion for some really bad Pirates teams 15+ years ago.

I won't miss Charlie because he was a consistent ace his whole career. He was not. I will miss him because he plays his heart out and is totally transparent about what he's thinking and feeling and it makes him relatable. And he broke his leg in the World Series, and ultimately that's a trump card.

BTW, was already unlikely but the Braves chances of resigning Fried just took a huge hit with Musgrove having TJ.

Good. Let the Padres waste millions on him. He is as unclutch as they come at this point in his career.

Doesn't help to have Chipper going on podcasts saying how he hates their hitting approach.

Chipper flat out quit. So whatever he says, even if there is truth to it, comes off as sour grapes.

You could also reliably pencil him in for 30 starts and 150 innings every year. He hit those numbers every year he was here.

Morton for $8M or so would be more than fine. He's still very solid for a 5th starter and really he’s okay for a 4th starter.

If the offense becomes good again his 5.1 IP, 3 runs on 105 pitches and 3 HBP act is okay. It’s much more frustrating when 3 runs seems like 10.

Agreed. He is so frustrating at times but you know what you’re getting. For the right price I’d love to have him back. This year proved you can’t have too much pitching. So unless they think AJSS or Waldrep are ready then we need another guy.

I agree with the assessment of Morton, as previously stated. If they feel confident that Strider and Sale will be full go as the 1-2, then Morton would be fine as a number 5.

But as of right now, I don’t think you can reasonably count on either of those two making it through a full season in 2025. So I think you need to take the $8 million you’d pay Morton and add another $17-20 to it to find a 1-2 type starter.

Spotrac has him valued at 6 years $136 million, so roughly $22 million/year. That's a no brainer, but I know some team will give him $30/year. And I know AA will be hung up on years but he just paid a 40 year old Morton $20 million in 2024 dollars. $22 million in 2030 would be a steal for a 36 year old.
