That would be fine logic if you didn’t also think pretty much every player on the team is top 2 or 3 at their position

In Homer fantasyland it’s an awful job, he got handed the best lineup in baseball and even before the injuries they were bad.

In the real world he wasn’t able to get much out of some very talented but historically streaky hitters. I think firing him has to be on the table if he doesn’t have a solid plan to fix it next year, but there is an air of complacency at all levels of this org.

I can't believe Bummer's option is over $7M.

Solid guy in the pen, no doubt, but more expensive than I thought he'd be.

I am constantly amazed by how lucrative it is to be a modestly productive lefty reliever in the MLB

He would get that easily on the market. Peripherals and all the batted ball data were incredible. Snit lost faith in him after a shaky/unlucky first month and a guy who was a borderline top 10 reliever in the sport was relegated to mop up duty.

I’ll get the payroll updated in the OP tonight.

Just finished updating all the CBT salaries.

Some of the spotrac numbers are a little off.

By my calculations we finished the year with a $278.53 million luxury tax payroll this season and we will pay about $12.46 million in taxes.

We have $228.4 million in luxury tax salaries on the book going into next season assuming we non tender Laureano, Ynoa, Biggio and White.

We will enter the offseason $50 million under our end of year payroll for this year but only $12 million under the luxury tax threshold. This will be our third straight year over the tax so we will pay $0.50 in tax for every $1 we spend on salaries after the first $12 million spent this offseason.

If payroll increases as AA indicated today we are likely looking at a $300 million+ CBT payroll including the taxes.

David Fletcher ($7M) is the only albatross on the books and that’s remaining from the Kelenic maneuvering. Pierce Johnson ($7.13M) and Sean Murphy ($12.17M) are probably the worst contracts of players who will be on the OD roster.

Ozuna ($16M) and Soler ($12.13M) are the only real trade candidates of the 8 figure guys if you’re trying to create some flexibility.

He said that last year and by my calculations the payroll technically increased even without signing anyone, so him saying that isn’t really indicative of anything

We added about $40M from 23 to 24 in actual payroll. $30M in salary obligations and $10M more in tax payments.

$206M actual payroll and $3M in tax in 2023 and $236M actual payroll and $12.5M tax in 2024.

Right now we have $218M committed in actual payroll for 2025. The tax number is actually going to start dipping beneath the actual payroll in the coming years with all the extensions smoothing the AAVs which should be very helpful.

I completely forgot he was a southpaw.

Picking up that option was a no-brainer.

What bad contract could we trade Murphy for? Was thinking Bae but the Cubs don’t need a catcher. But then again, neither did we and still added one.
And the Cubs would have to throw in a lot of cash.

With $50M to spend this would be the 26 man OD roster as things currently stand with their CBT salaries

C:
TDA ($8M)
Murphy ($12.17M)

IF:
Olson ($21M)
Albies ($5M)
Riley ($21.2M)
Arcia ($2.43M)
________

OF:
Harris ($9M)
Soler ($12.13M)
Kelenic ($2.3M)
Ozuna ($16M)
Acuña ($12.5M)
_________

You need another IF and another OF (maybe 2 if Kelenic is in Gwinnett)

SP
Sale ($19M)
Strider ($12.5M)
Lopez ($10M)
Schwellenbach ($0.76M)
AJSS/Waldrep/Holmes/Anderson ($0.76M)

RP
Iglesias ($14.5M)
Jimenez ($8.67M)
Bummer ($7.25M)
Lee ($1.2M)
Johnson ($7.13M)
Hernandez ($0.76M)
Holmes ($0.76M)
_______

1 spot for a lefty in the bullpen for sure.

So very few holes and a lot of money to spend. I would think getting a SS (moving Arcia to the UTIL role) and getting another big time arm in the pen, preferably a lefty, are going to be the top two priorities. Moving one of Soler or Ozuna and getting a lefty OF with good on base skills is possible as well. A backend vet starter is possible as well depending on Strider’s recovery.

A lot of flexibility without a ton of clear holes outside of SS imo.
