I think I'm going to be the only one who's Pro-Olivera entering the season.

All the criticisms are valid though and Markakis is still the biggest head scratcher to me.

They're definitely going to trade Maybin imo. I think they buy maybe one pretty solid reliever and then sign a bounce back candidate or two in the pen as well. And the more I think about the more I'm thinking they maybe try to get a bat or two via trade or at least a mid-tier FA or two.

This offense as things stand is just horrendous.

What would the lineup be if the season started tomorrow?

Aybar
Markakis
Olivera
Freeman
Maybin
AJP
Garcia
Peterson

Without Aybar and Maybin it's even worse.

Markakis
Alexei Ramirez or whoever
Freeman
Olivera
AJP
Garcia
Peterson
Bourn

They've had a year to look at all these pitchers except Newcomb and Ellis. No way they don't at least trade a few of them for offense this offseason, right?

Forgot names, just remember the rumor. A third of the teams are forbidden from signing anyone for over 300k. Which is weird because this may be the last July 2 before an international draft.

As for the Wood/Pereza/Olivera deal, I think it makes less sense because it feels like this deal pushes our timeline to contend back a year or two. Which is another year or 2 on the wrong side of 30 for Hector. I like Hector, but his skills will be declining by the time we are contending.

you thinking Sexi Alexi on a two year deal? Trade him at the 17 deadline and hand the keys to Ozzie? Kinda of like the train of thought, esp if they trade Aybar like I expect them to do, so no one should be dusting off their old Willy Aybatr jersey just yet.

Yeah, I think he makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, that's my main issue with the Olivera trade (along with Peraza being a throw in for the draft pick), he doesn't fit from an age standpoint. And he also can't seem to play the position we traded for him to play. Olivera's bat is much more valuable at 3B than LF. If Olivera was 26 rather than almost 31 I wouldn't have batted an eye at the trade.

Both that move and the Markakis moves make the FO look a little bipolar, which is my only real concern moving forward. Trading Simmons does make it seem like they realize 2018 or so is where they should be shooting for rather than 2017, which is what we should be doing. My major concern going into this offseason was that we would do some stupid stuff in a weak attempt to contend rather than continue a pure rebuild.

And yeah, most of the big spenders can't spend any money during this international signing period, we should be sitting pretty.

Does no one else agree that Olivera should be considered a very young 31 years old?

Unless he sucks at the ML level, he should last longer than a 31 year old who's entering their 8-10th year of MLB service.

Well he's probably really 37 anyways.

I'd bet my left nut Freeman goes nowhere

I bet the only thing stopping them will be his contract

I would say the only reason we trade Freeman is because he wants out. Either that or they are getting concerned with this recent rash of injuries. Either way, it would be nonsensical to let him go IMO

Agreed I'll flip my shite if Freddie goes. I can deal with Julio but not Freddie.

I, for one, would be all good with trading Freddie. He is solid at the plate but gets hurt frequently and we would most likely get a massive return

I just got an ESPN alert saying that Freeman could be a potential trade option for the Astros (in that writers opinion). I don't even want to know what it would take to get him away from ya'll.

I'd like to see us talk to the Red Sox. We match up really well.

For Teheran, are the braves going to be asking for a major leaguer, major league ready prospect, or just prospects?
