They throw those in to keep the audience guessing. If they always cut away to a random awesome shot everyone knows whats coming. If they cut away to an average shot once and a whole, it keeps the suspense.

It's a two stroke penalty to play the wrong ball but since he also hit his ball I don't think that counts as "playing" the wrong ball.
