Oh I get it. I teach at a 5A D2 school and find myself becoming anti-mega school. I just think it’s a cheap way to success when you can pluck from 5000 students. But if it’s what the community wants, then it’s no matter.

They keep discussing a 7A, but it will be geographically lopsided. You’ll have maybe 2 schools in the current Region IV footprint. I haven’t glanced much at the newest realignment figures, but I assume a majority of the schools meeting a 7A number would be in DFW.

Oh, I just thought you meant they were getting wealthier and less good ol' boy That probably goes as well for the Fort Bend ISD schools SW of Houston.

I bet it sucks too for kids who would be good enough to start at a lot of other high schools, but can't move and are stuck in a high school with an enrollment that's bigger than the undergrad enrollment at several FBS colleges.

It was eye-opening when a couple of new Houston area suburban schools made playoffs, and you realized how much depth must have been stacked at schools like Katy and North Shore.

Well, wealth can still lead to good football somehow. Southlake fields good teams. Highland Park is playing this weekend.

I think North Shore is like more than twice the size of Galena Park HS. That’s so strange. Most places would redraw some lines to get a balance.

Katy has added several new schools, and I think it’s eroded Katy HS a little bit. Paetow even managed to win a state title in 5A.

Northshore is open enrollment do that helps them a little

Granted there’s only one other HS in the district which is a 5a school (that competes well in district but not outside). But I’m sure it helps.

Then you get to an area like Cy fair which has an insane amount of schools. We’re at Bridgeland but there are 5 high schools within like 5 miles of my house. It’s insane.

Isn’t it strange? No one will accuse Southlake or Westlake of being more athletic than DeSoto, Duncanville, or North Shore, yet they are still standing. The demographic/socioeconomic battles surrounding the game are interesting at times. It’s refreshing to see one of the old inner city schools compete for a title a la SOC or Austin LBJ. Hell, our old local powerhouse Calallen was full of that farm boy strength. They could cruise through Region IV, but the road would end against LaMarque. It was a speed game, and LM was superior.

An interesting part of what led to this is the way that Houston handled annexation and the way Dallas did annexation

and then the corresponding ISDs were somewhat affected because ISD's only one high school is actually in the city limits

These teams recruit like crazy. Desoto, Duncanville, Shiner, North Shore. Hell, Columbus went out and got Rigdon, Osborne, and Carruthers for this run with the Schobel boys.

Rigdon’s dad is a coach isn’t he?

Also, perhaps it’s changed completely, but I graduated in 2009 and was on a state contending team for three years. Was teammates with several other baws that played D1 and not a single one of them would say they were ever legitimately ‘recruited’ besides by the local TAPPS powerhouse (smartest kid with Down’s syndrome).

Now did some families with stud athletes move to what was considered a ‘ritzy suburb’ that offered better academics and sports opportunities? Duh.

I think this is what happens 90% of the time when people start screaming about public schools that ‘recruit’ here, especially programs that aren’t 5A-6A

It’s changed. And yes, his dad is a coach. A coach with a stud running back son that was pretty much a perfect compliment to their passing attack.

Winning also breeds success. Families willingly move into these districts. Even here where I live, each of the six high schools has a special program. If you want to be in said program, you can transfer to that school.

Yes, that’s been going on for years in order to play for Katy instead of the other 7 KISD high schools.

That’s the only reason why I don’t care much about the recruiting crap. It seems like everybody does it these days.

I covered Texas for many years as a sales rep and it’s fun to see some of my old customers playing for a title. Kilgore would be the most well known of that group.

I thought they moved the title games to the Star at one time. When did they move back to Jerry World?

I don’t think it ever moved to the store. They have a lot of playoff games there, but I think the finals have been in Arlington since the stadium opened.

They’ve been at Jerry World for years.

I miss when the site was determined by the two teams playing. That said, most of the schools playing are in DFW anyway. I liked seeing some of the games at the Alamodome, Astrodome, etc.
