HOUSTON (AP)—The Houston Texans have signed coach Gary Kubiak to a contract extension that runs through the 2012 season.

The Texans went 9-7 in 2009, the franchise’s first winning record. Houston is 31-33 in Kubiak’s four seasons, though the team is still seeking its first playoff berth.

The 48-year-old Kubiak took over the Texans in January 2006 after the team finished 2-14. His original contract was due to expire after the 2010 season.

Kind of standard, for whatever reason teams don't like lame duck coaches. If he doesn't win double digits and make the playoffs next year, I think he'll be gone. Its not really that hard to win 10 games, teams go from losing records to playoffs the next year all the time.

They need another S and CB, another pass rusher wouldn't hurt, maybe a DT.

If Slaton could go back to 08 form that would be great, otherwise they could use another RB.

They should have made the playoffs this year, of 7 loses, 6 were close, they blew chance to send 4 (Az, 1st Jax, 1st Indy, 2nd Tenn) into OT, blew chance to win 1 (2nd Jax) late. Blew big lead in 1 (2nd Indy). Only blow out was 1st game.

They are similar to the 2008 Saints, who also lost a good number (Wash, Den, Minn, Chic of the top of my head) of close games, good passing attack, so so rushing, so so D.

Pretty sure the schedule next year is going to be pretty brutal. This was the year for them to make it.

Half the teams that made the playoffs in 2008, did not in 2009. Schedule looks brutal, but may or may not be. Either way, its double digits and playoffs or GTFO.

They defiantly need a S, CB, and a run stopping DT. If they can upgrade those positions they could have a pretty good defense. Slaton needs to drop the 17 pounds he added and quit trying to be a RB that pounds the ball between the tackles. I'm not sure if that was his or the teams idea but it needs to be corrected.

They will be able to get a decent RB in the second or third round. I think they'll grab a DT or S in round 1.

They really need a OG too.

they want better than decent. They want a guy who can make an immediate impact and start from day 1.

Kubicak will not draft a RB in the first round, period.

what beat writer? link?

I listen to Houston sports talk all day.

I guess it may depend on who is there, lets just say I seriously doubt they will take a RB in round 1, unless there is absolutely no: S, CB, DT, OL worth taking there. You are not gonna get a Peterson at 20.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak revealed in an interview with The Score 1510 in Denver that Steve Slaton underwent surgery to repair nerve damage in his neck in mid-January.

Kubiak believes the nerve issue may have been at the root of Slaton's fumbling problems last season. Beat writer John McClain has reported that the injury is not career-threatening, and Slaton is expected to eventually get back to 100 percent. The surgery, however, makes it even less likely that he'll be counted on for the featured back role in 2010

Beat writer John McClain believes the Texans' biggest draft need this offseason is a "running back they can count on."

"A back who'll be durable and dependable and not have health issues or fumble issues or both," continues McClain. The Texans clearly can't count on Steve Slaton to carry the load after his disappointing season, and Arian Foster's strong finish doesn't equate to "dependable." Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer is a possibility for Houston.

The Houston Chronicle "assumes" the Texans will focus heavily on running back in April's draft.

Steve Slaton remains a premier passing-down back, but his 3.1 yards per carry average, fumbling issues, and neck injury don't inspire confidence that he can be the lead dog.

Are there even any decent RB in this draft? Spiller maybe? He'll be gone by 20.

Jahvid Best and Jonathan Dwyer will likely be there in the 2nd. Joe McKnight, Dixon, Gerhart in the 3rd. There really isn't a RB worth a first round pick outside Spiller.

Where the Texans draft in the first they could get someone like DT Brian Price out of UCLA or S Earl Thomas from UT
