Correct, if we can join the SEC, we'll have a shot at it. But I don't think that's going to happen.

You had your chance, actually. You were independent, which meant that you could schedule anyone who would play you.

If Tech was independent, a realistic schedule could look like this:

Home: Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Tulsa

Away: Arkansas (@ Little Rock), Auburn, Louisiana State, Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri, Navy, Texas Christian

In any given season, six of those teams are probably ranked. An undefeated Louisiana Tech in this instance has a shot.

When you see a FCS school (Nicholls) on the schedule, you know Tech isn't looking to win a title, but rather they're looking for the stability of shitty conference life.

Nobody put Tech in the WAC. Nobody told them they can't win a national title. To get to a title game, you have to play great teams and beat them. Usually, in order to play a lot of great teams, you have to build a big stadium and fill it. The fact that Tech cannot do that is no one's problem but Tech's--they're just not good enough.

More like:
West
Tulsa
SMU
Rice
Houston
UNT
LA Tech
ULM

East
Middle Tennessee
UAB
South Alabama
Troy
Southern Miss
ULL
Tulane

ECU & Marshall go to Big East
There are a few unlikely/impossible things about your scenario:
1) ECU and Marshall will not go to the Big East. No way.
2) Houston would be in the Mountain West in this scenario; they're on the MWC's radar.
3) You've left some teams out.

Here's all the non-BCS/MWC schools in the South in this case:

Texas: North Texas, Rice, Southern Methodist, Texas State (moving up)
Oklahoma: Tulsa
Arkansas: Arkansas State
Louisiana: Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane
Mississippi: Southern Mississippi
Alabama: Alabama-Birmingham, Troy, South Alabama (moving up)
Florida: Florida Atlantic, Florida International
Georgia: Georgia Southern (moving up), Georgia State (moving up)
North Carolina: East Carolina
Tennessee: Middle Tennessee State
Kentucky: Western Kentucky
West Virginia: Marshall

That's 22 teams. Definitely two different conferences (unless two or three of the northern teams--say, Marshall and WKU--went to the MAC).

Looks to me like:

Southwest Conference
Arkansas State
Louisiana Tech
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana-Monroe
North Texas
Rice
Southern Methodist
Texas State
Tulane
Tulsa

Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Mid-South
East Carolina
Georgia Southern
Georgia State
Marshall
Middle Tennessee State
Western Kentucky

Gulf South
Alabama-Birmingham
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
South Alabama
Southern Mississippi
Troy

I think tech had more fans AT Auburn than Tulane had at their home game vs Tulsa.

(that should get it stirring again!)

But a lot of schools may be going in the "right direction", and perhaps playing Tech did not suit their needs.

That's actually a good point. Tech can't schedule everyone it wants to. We would love to schedule Tulane right now, but so far we haven't been able to.

This can be remedied. Two steps:

1. Build a big stadium.
2. Fill it.

Do that, and you'll be able to schedule virtually anyone you want, and you just might get an invitation to a nice sparkly conference.

But until you can do that, don't blame the BCS or anyone else. It's nobody's problem but Tech's.

I am sure it is in the thread somewhere but I will ask again. Whose stadium holds more, Tech or ULM?

It's about a 200 seat difference in favor of Aillet, if I'm not mistaken.

Correction:
Aillet = 30600
Malone = 30427

Stadium expansion? Outdrawing ULM? I've heard nothing of this.

I think that xiv is still single... I don't know how he has the time!

Seriously I wouldn't mind seeing Tech and ULM play again even if its not every year.

I know my scenario wasn't great. Just going off one of the others. Didn't put a whole lot of thought into it.

Actually I think what may be a good idea is possibly splitting up D-IA. SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big 10, PAC-10, some other teams like Boise St., Utah, TCU, etc. in one division and the remaining conferences a seperate division. I'm not saying SunBelt or CUSA schools go back to D-IAA, but creating a divison in between the two existing ones. Just a thought. It would give schools in the lower conferences to actually compete for a nationa championship, which would include a playoff system.

We have a bulldog statue that all the players touch on the way to the field. It is called "Spirit of '88." The spirit of '88 was Tech's 1st year in 1A and we played some monster teams on the road. We called ourselves "The Road Warriors." We got blown-out alot. 2 years later, we went 8-3-1 and played in the Independence Bowl with a lighter schedule.

1988 is not the way to go... not even for a "BCS team."

I take this as proof that Tech can thrive in the Sun Belt and nowhere else.

So playing tough teams on the road is NOT going in the "right direction". Tech needs a lighter schedule to be going in the "right direction". Seems that a tradidional rival in ULM would fit the bill.
