Always liked ole Pau. Little girl certainly needs that after losing her dad.

quote:kind of a hard relationship to describe. i think it was a good one. i think pau respected kobe and appreciated what kobe was able to do for his career. i think kobe liked pau enough because he saw what pau was able to do for him as well. but its no secret that playing for kobe was tough and it was no different for pau. apparently kobe got on pau a little too much at times and their relationship wasnt always perfect because of that. but pau never seemed to let that ruin their relationship and i think pau seemed to appreciate what he had with kobe more once he got away from it and didnt have to deal with being kobes teammate every day
I didn’t realize they were that close

Pretty much all of this. They weren’t as dominant as Kobe/Shaq but man they had such great synergy. Just two extremely high IQ basketball players that could play off each other phenomenally.
Probably my favorite Kobe/Pau story was in the 2008 Olympics. The Lakers has just gotten bullied and pushed around by Boston in the Finals, particularly Gasol by Garnett and Perkins. Fast forward 2 months and USA/Spain are in the gold medal game. It’s like the first minute of the game and Pau sets a screen on Kobe, and Kobe completely mows his arse over purposely. Lebron and Wade have mentioned how they were shocked by Kobe going that hard at Pau like that. USA wins the gold thanks to Kobe taking over late in the 4th, now fast forward to the first day of training camp for the 08-09 season. Gasol opens his locker and there hangs Kobe’s gold medal. Basically Kobe’s way of telling Pau, if he ever wants to win anything, he cannot be soft.
09 Finals comes around and this time Pau more than holds his own against prime Dwight Howard and the Lakers win the chip. 2010 in the rematch against Boston, it was Gasol who was pushing Garnett around in the 4th quarter of game 7.
Tldr damn I loved those two Lakers.

I know one nba writer in real life and have been told the two nicest guys in the NBA in the last decade are Ricky Rubio and Pau.
But anyone who has seen Pau sing How to Save a Life at the charity karaoke function knows what an earnest guy he is

Kobe:
quote:
“One of my favorite ones (things that motivate teammates), Pau hates it every time I tell this story. Hates it. But we lost to the Celtics in 2008. And it was a physical series, I mean, they beat the crap out of us. So we go into the Olympic year that year, we played Spain in the gold medal match and we beat them. So now we come back to start training camp, and when Pau shows up the first day of training camp, I have my gold medal hanging in his locker.
quote:
“The one thing that he [Pau Gasol] truly, truly loves is his country. And that is like everything to him. So it just drove him crazy. I said ‘Pau, listen…’ and he said ‘You’re an a-hole!’ I said: ‘Listen, Pau, you lost to the Celtics, you lost to us in the gold medal match, let’s not make this three in a row this year, OK? Let’s win this thing.’ And that was it.
Pau was a phenomenon, to begin with. And for him was just to step up to the next level of physicality, which he did and we went to win back-to-back championships.”
