And I could care less about his love for LSU. The man doesn't have an agenda. He has opinions that he's not afraid to share, but he doesn't shove them down our throats. He's open to the fact that some people may actually know more than him on a topic, including callers. He's not pretentious at all, and actually really funny.

Him and RR are good radio. RR by himself..........meh.

SVP is easily the best sports radio guy out there.

Did someone really say this? I mean I like SVP but he is a second tier guy at the moment.

The dude was on the Late Show with David Letterman in December?

How many second tier radio hosts were on Letterman in the last year??

I don't dislike the guy by any means. But the idea that he is the next Howard Cosell is ludicrous.

I knew Howie Cosell personally, and you sir, are NO Howard Cosell!!!

Here's the truth some whipper snappers may not know. Cosell himself is "overrated" (although I hate to ever use that term).

Cosell was Cosell. He was great, by God, the man was great... at certain things. He was at least half entertainer and less than half objective journalist.

The man was not a fan of the truth, but he could spin a narrative of half truths better than anybody.

He would not have done well in the 24 hour sports news cycle of today. The kind of in-depth analysis that Van Pelt does is not something that Cosell could do.

So, by that measure, perhaps SVP IS actually able to hold Cosell's jock - holding the jock of the quintessential jock sniffer of all time.

lol fanboys. We can't enjoy listening to a guy that loves lsu and talks good sports. Most of them suck and try to gain attention he doesn't. take your fanboy crap out of here

how many threads about Van Pelt does this make so far in the past week? four? seven? he's a fricking personality, not an athlete or a journalist. between threads about SVP and threads about Dan Patrick I wonder if anyone on here consumes anything besides what they're fed by media conglomerates.

I'd much rather listen to the various hosts on Mad Dog Radio and the shows on MLB Network Radio.

Well he couldn't. Do you think Cosell would have been capable of fleshing out both sides of an issue?

Hell no! That kind of analysis would not have even occurred to Cosell as something to even be considered. How would that have fit his brash bombastic narrative? Don't you remember the clashes he had with Gifford and Dandy Don in the MNF booth?

I was born in 1983. Have read a lot about Cosell and have also heard my dad talk about him compared to today's sports journalist.

You do realize 90 percent of Van Pelt's job is reading a teleprompter and sticking to whatever script/talking points his producers give him, right?

Who are your top 5 radio guys?

You like mad dog radio? Really? Some mick goons yelling into a microphone about Boston & NY sports all day? That's good radio?

No, not really. I don't listen to Scott Van Pelt too often, but when I do, he seems to provide off the cuff intelligent discussion of sports topics.

I'm not really a fan boy of SVP. It was just humorous to me that we are using Howard Cosell as the paradigm of excellence in sports broadcasting.

Like I said, Cosell was very entertaining, and the man was no dummy, but his ego was bigger than any modern day sports fan could possibly fathom.

You really need to watch some clips of him, and not just his late career, man crush, interviews with Ali. Let me see if I can find some that are more representative.

Here's one where Cosell is analyzing the Sugar Ray Leoanrd v. Tommy Hearns fight:
LINK

It's actually a pretty good analysis, minus the quirky techno graphics of the period. But please notice Cosell's entertaining style of presentation, and his unerring confidence in his opinions. He was like that every time he was on the air, whether it was the Ali/Frasier fight, or Olympic ping pong.

yeah, I don't know where this Cosell love fest is coming from outside of the usual "back in my day" / "up a hill, both ways" kind of talk.

Like you, I'm old enough to remember Howie from the pre MNF days, when his claim to fame was covering boxing before Clay changed his name to Ali.

My impression of Howie was that he was a pompous, first class jerk. Accurate assessment??

I like the fact that he still sounds genuinely happy to interview guys, and admits he is impressed with what they can do as athletes. So many reporters and newscasters today act like its no big deal to meet anyone
