LINK to NY Times article

Arizona/ASU comes in #1. It doesn't surprise me. ASU is our strongest rivalry, and there isn't a second. I'm surprised that they didn't get all the rivalry points.

I respect Pat Tillman immensely. That is the one and only positive thing I'll say about ASU.

A snippet from a local article describing the results.

"Based on the study, Wildcats fans allocated an average of 89 points to ASU and Sun Devils fans gave an average of 83 points to UA. The total score for Arizona-ASU beat out all other rivalries in sports, including the Los Angeles Lakers versus Boston Celtics in the NBA and the Los Angeles Dodgers versus San Francisco Giants in MLB."

Eh i don’t disagree with it

they are the ones where neither team has any other significant rivals to steal away points.

Although I am kinda shocked about SC and Clemson

Saints-Falcons as top NFL rivalry

ETA: I have no idea how Arizona-Arizona St is the top overall rivalry. There's at least 10 rivalries just in college that I'd think were more intense than ASU-Arizona

Based on that methodology, it just sounds like a Match.com pairing rather than a rivalry.

“You have a secret rival! Join to figure out who!”

In second place is a rivalry nearly everyone would cite as one of the biggest. Michigan fans gave 69 points to Ohio State (with Michigan State and Notre Dame also getting some support). And Ohio State fans were even more unanimous, giving 91 points to Michigan.

This is fair

It also doesn't take into account the actual intensity of the fans.

ASU and Arizona might not have any other rivals, but are they poisoning their trees or teabagging unconscious people? Are they shooting their relatives out of anger when they lose to their rival?

I just don't see that kind of spirit

I do think that NO/ATL is a very underrated rivalry (although this article obviously rated it extremely high ).

I have lived in ATL, NYC, CHI. ATL/NO rivalry was more heated than anything I have experienced in NYC or CHI.

Bingo. It basically means teams self-identify as each other’s rivals, not that there is any substance to it.

Auburn and LSU has involved fire, kickers getting smacked around by a marching band, two last second touchdowns, the difference between going to the SECCG and going home, etc, and likely wasn’t in the top 50 because neither identifies the other as their primary rival. Both probably said Bama instead.

Michigan fans don't even care to win more than 9-10 games per year anymore.

ask em @hailhailtomichigan and @bunkmoreland

the "rivalry" has turned into a complete joke and most objective observers agree

With so many players and coaches changing teams from year-to-year, you don't really see the bad blood between teams anymore. Saints vs. Falcons rivalry seems to be one of the few where both teams and cities generally don't like each other.

Think about all the “secondary” rivals some SEC school have.

Alabama’s primary rival is Auburn, no doubt. However, they have a very intense rivalry with Tennessee and LSU.

Georgia has three intense rivalries: Auburn, Florida, and Georgia Tech. They also have rivalries with South Carolina, Tennessee, Clemson, etc.

LSU would definitely say Bama is their top rival. However, LSU also has big rivalries with Arkansas, A&M, Auburn, Florida, and Ole Miss.

Who is Florida’s biggest rival? FSU or UGA? Florida also has intense rivalries with LSU and Auburn.

shite, there are even some old Ole Miss fans who claim LSU is our top rival, even when it is clearly Mississippi State. Along that same line, some Auburn fans might claim UGA as their top rival when it is clearly Alabama.

Pretty much.

The one team in the SEC that I would say has a single big rival is South Carolina and that is because they and Clemson have played forever while their history in the SEC only dates back to 1992.

A&M isn’t in that boat because they had preexisting rivalries with Arky and LSU while Mizzou doesn’t have a rival because they have cut out Kansas, who was their main historic rival, as part of leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.
