I understand that his players in New York are somewhat better, but this is the NFL. How could his defense in New Orleans be so completely atrocious, while his defense with the NYG this year is so good?

Because the Giants FO made the defense a priority?

Because the Saints have the worst defensive personnel in the league and have for some time now. You can't blame 3 different DC's and think that they are all terrible.

His defense in NY in 2015 sucked. It's all about players

his D is heavily predicated on edge rushers and man CBs who dominate

when the Saints signed him, i was like "how is this going to work when we have no edge rushers and like 1 CB?"

we saw how that worked out

As a Saints fan we consider LBs like Robertson and Ellerbe good players. On most teams they are backups or below average starters. When you get excited over Ellerbe and Robertson, you have a bad defense. Same principle applied but with different players when Spags was here.

He also was hired when Sean Payton was suspended and the team didn't have a head coach. He is a very good DC that will probably in a few years have his name back in head coach talks.

His whole defense only works if he has elite pass-rushers on the d-line that can create pressure only rushing 4. New Orleans barely had NFL caliber pass rushers while he was there. Personnel matters.

Spags had a rough time in Nola, especially without SP there. Though it is funny, SP reportedly fired spags when he said that the scouting department was trash and couldn't find good players. Two years later, the Saints cleaned house and retooled their scouting department. So, Spags was likely right.

No question Spagnuolo is a good play caller. He stifled that great 2007 Pats defense in the Super Bowl.
