Yeah people act like the 1972-74 Phillies (especially 1972) were reflective of his whole career and those were outliers.

Honestly IMO the 1972 team should’ve been a wee bit better but Frank Lucchesi was not a good manager. OK in the minors, but as Mike DuBose proved in football, some folks ain’t cut out for a top job in the big time.

Again, we can agree to disagree. IMO Knucksie actually IS the most underrated pitcher in MLB history.

OK. Again we can agree to disagree. I’m not going to try to change your mind and you ain’t going to change my mind. It’s my .02 and I am sticking to it. I don’t care about being right, I care about being honest.

Wait. Let’s look at something important here. He started 41 games and had a decision in 37 of those games. That’s nuts and in todays era his season wil never be matched.

Lefty was also a better hitter than Niekro...

Carlton was an absolute beast and an extremely interesting character.

The fact that there are people on here arguing that Niekro was as good as Carlton only makes the point of my OP that Carlton is underrated/underappreciated.

They’re both great. I think Niekro is underrated, IMO the better word for Carlton is underappreciated. Again, the only way Carlton is underrated is if you think he’s in contention for GOAT. He’s not close and neither is Niekro.

I want to toss this out about Carlton. When he was with the Phillies, Larry Bowa once got onto him for not sufficiently accommodating the fans. Bowa told him, “It’s the fans’ game, we owe them something.”

Carlton shot back, “It’s our game, we only owe them our performance.”

Interesting attitude but he’s an interesting individual …

I think that there are a lot of Braves fans on here who naturally hold their boy in higher regard than everyone else.

That's understandable.

But Niekro was no Carlton, not even close.

On this date in 1970, Johnny Bench, playing outfield, hit 3 HR off Carlton

I loved me some Phil Niekro, but Carlton was better

Maybe underappreciated, but I don't think you can really describe a Hall of Famer as "underrated".

As hall of famers go, he most certainly is.

Again if you’re going to call him underrated, you’re trying to say he’s a candidate for GOAT and he’s not. That’s what it seems people who keep pushing it want to hear, but I sincerely don’t believe that’s the case.

Of the post-World War II pitchers I think Clemens, Seaver, Maddux, R. Johnson, Spahn, P. Martinez and Gibson were for sure better, and Niekro and G. Perry were right with him. I will concede he’s top 10 postwar, not all time.
