Stephen A Smith is mad again about NFL's lack of black HCs

I realize Stephen A is an actor playing a role here, and none of this is new, but I want to discuss the merits of his complaints:

1) Despite blacks making up 75% of the NFL player pool, only 9% of HCs are blacks.
2) Recent hires Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Judge had woefully thin resumes, but got the benefit of the doubt because they're white.

The first thing I question about #1 is: Why is the player pool 75% black when the general population is about 13%? If the argument is that blacks are being unfairly shut out of HC positions, wouldn't those same arguments apply to white players?

Or, maybe nobody is being unfairly shut out and the cream is simply rising to the top?

I mean, how many of them are actively trying to be head coaches? Don't you have to look at that statistic as well?

ESPN is mad about this. Every show has been discussing it for two days.

LeBatard went off about it, saying they (other shows) are only doing it to fill time because it's a slow time in sports. He made some solid points about it being a waste of time once the coach is hired and that since the Rooney rule was put in place the media has done this every year.

The cream is certainly not rising to the top when guys like Pat Shurmur get two HC jobs within the same decade.

Everyone knows white owners and white GM’s are racist. That’s why they are in a profession where they employ mostly black people.

When the opportunity isn't being presented to you and you see other colleagues (Vance Joseph & Steve Wilks) being fired after 1 season. You probably start to question whether or not you should even stick your neck out for the position.

Frankly, I think it's an issue where owners don't care or they may not see a correlation between winning and hiring black HC/assistants. So I can see why guys like SAS voicing their concern that the NFL only has four minority HCs.

I don't think any of the black coordinators or assistant coaches want a job given to them just because they are black.

I think all the negative attention by ESPN et all actually DECREASES opportunities for minorities.

If ESPN cheerleads for a minority to get the job, they are highly likely to attack the team if they fire the coach for not working out.

Teams have been firing coaches after a season or two if they clearly aren’t competent. Imagine the media shitstorm if a black coach gets fired after a season even if they go 0-16.

Don't they have to apply or get asked to interview first?

Can we at least see who is applying and not getting the interviews?

Some are still coaching towards the Superbowl. The NFL could easily make a rule saying no new hires until the day after or the week after so those assistants could have a shot.

I don’t think owners are not hiring people as head coaches because they’re black, but there is underrepresentation for sure. I’m not sure how that could be denied.

The issue to me is that there are so few black or minority coordinators, which is the main pool head coaches are hired from. If there are only a few minority OCs of DCs out there then it really should be no big surprise there aren’t a lot of minority head coaches.

I don’t think minorities aren’t being hired as coordinators because the head coaches are racist, I think they just tend to stay within their networking group of people they know/what they think is safe(typically people with experience as a coordinator).

I don't think it decreases the opportunity of minority hires. The owners aren't going to magically think this is an issue that needs to be fixed if someone doesn't voice it as a concern. Frankly, I think Goodell does view this is a problem. But I also know he can't force the owners to do something about it.

Russillo mentioned the idea that if a team is perpetually hiring guys year after year. That a rule should be put in place that one of every four hires should be a minority. I don't know if that is a promising idea. But it's pretty clear that the Rooney rule is flawed and isn't fixing the issue at hand.

The craziest thing to me is how unsuccessful black HCs have been in NCAA. Holy recruiting advantage, Batman.

Kellerman and Stephen A. are the leading voices for ESPN's race based outrage programming. The Rooney Rule is dumb and should be tossed out.
