It’s funny how hard this narrative has been pushed through the media contacts. Like he’s going to improve local recruiting or something

It’s the completely opposite of same ole same ole for the Steelers.

The only thing “same ole” about it is Rooney being a complete fricking moron.

Solid hire

Born in Pittsburgh
61% win avg (Tomlin 63%)
Won the division 8 times (same as Tomlin)
Super Bowl champ (same as Tomlin)
4 NFC championships games (1 more than Tomlin)
8 divisional champ games (3 more than Tomlin)
Coach of the year (Tomlin zero)
.500 in the playoffs (Tomlin .400)

Imagine having the history and tradition of the Steelers, and hiring Mike fricking McCarthy as your 4th head coach like ever

Not 4th ever. 4th since 1969. The Steelers have been a franchise since 1933 and have had 18 coaches.

But the last 3.
Regular season records 535-352-4(.600) - 1969-2025 - 57 years:

Chuck Noll 193-148-1 (.566) - 1969-1991 - 23 years
Bill Cowher 149-90-1 (.623) - 1992-2006 - 15 years
Mike Tolin 193-114-2 (.628) - 2007-2025 - 19 years

Yeah, I'm not really certain the relevance in him being local in the professional ranks. Flop of a hire by the Steelers. McDermott would've been the better retread imo

Unlike Tomlin, McCarthy is allowed to have a losing season.

5 losing seasons (Tomlin 0)
12 playoff appearances (Tomlin 13)
Fired twice (tomlin 0)

It's a meh hire. It cold tun out to be great, only time will tell.

ETA: It is certainly not a bad hire, just not what most expected.

Nothing quite like hiring retreads that’s been fired from 2 jobs in his career. I’m sure he’s learned from his past mistakes.

Mike will know exactly what to dial up on third down since he can draw on cleaning the vomit stained floors of his father’s Pittsburgh bar

The Rodgers subplot of this is also hilarious and will be completely over covered by the media, since he and the Steelers are both now irrelevant in the scheme of winning anything

Exactly, I'm a Pittsburgh native too and don't give a damn where the coach is from.

It only matters to Art Rooney II, and he's a total dipshit.

You couldn't jam a toothpick between their resumes, but in the post season Mike edges him out

Its the post season that most fans got pissy over Tomlin about

Rightfully so. the guy had three playoff wins over the last 15 years. Two of those came against teams starting backups. He should have lost one of those if it wasn't for 30 gifted yards from Vontaze Burfict trying to decapitate Antonio Brown.

I understand. I edited to add context after you responded, saying that I don't think it's a bad hire, just not what I think most people expected.

In some respects, Tomlin has been a victim of his own success. Never having a losing season can put you behind the curve for talent because your draft spot is always to hig to draft a franchise QB, so now it becomes about money, players, and draft capital you are willing to give up to risk a college player living up to his potential, or you get a free agent QB who coast you a lot.

That was broken when they hired Tomlin.
