Yeah, I think part of the stare down was he had no idea what was coming. It looked like he tipped him the wrong pitch. If Heyward doesn't stare the guy down like a jack arse there is no issue.

If you aren't trying to steal signs are you even trying to win?
-Runner on first or second and the catcher isn't smart enough to put down more than one number.
-First base coach because the catcher can't close his legs.
-Dugout stealing them from the coach to the catcher (personal favorite).
Tendencies are more difficult to pick up the higher you get in baseball. However, knowing a curve is coming because the pitcher's index finger goes up is fair game.
Regardless, if you are doing it right, no one would know. It's not like a guy in the Dugout should be yelling "hey Johnny, here comes a fastball."
On the other side, as a catcher, I would never hit anyone for stealing our signs. I'd just go to the mound and change sets. If you got them off us, good job, let's change sets and see if you can get them now. It's not worth giving up a base runner.

MLB has some silly rules and all the unwritten rules.
If you can get away with it, why not?
If MLB team is not smart enough to cover it up, why not?
It happens all the time in college.

Any so-called sport that has unwritten rules is for pussies.

I know, but it's always fun to pick on Heyward.

Paul Harbor used to be our designated sign stealer back in the day.
Those weren't the only things he used to steal.

I had too until I read that post.
Keith McCormicks dad used to steal signs from 1st base on that Dodgers team. He would pick em up usually in the 1st inning. He'd yell your 1st name for fastball, last name for curve. I was amazed that almost no team ever caught on. But I agree with most on here--player or coach picks them up, totally fair and part of the game.
Btw, you think anybody ever picked up Shake's signs? They were relatively complicated.

Not on his pitches. Trey Fisher used to brag about how he'd steal everyone's signals. He could never figure ours out. They were good.
Every once in awhile I'll try to pick up signals during Tag's games. I'll give name for fastball, number for off speed. I try not to do it too much though and become too obvious.

I'm ok with it in certain situations. For instance if a runner on second is stealing them then relaying them to the batter then tough titties get better signs BUT if someone who isn't playing is spying on the signs and stealing them or using binoculars from the stands or something then I disagree with it
Exactly

It depends who is stealing them and who they are being stolen from. Obviously in the big leagues the catchers call the game, so the signs would have to be stolen from him. If it is a runner on second that is stealing them then I say it is part of the game. However, if it is somebody in center field with binoculars (looking at you Blue Jays), then it is bush league.
Exactly

We used to play a team in our district in high school that had a first base coach who would literally lean out into fair territory trying to see the catcher's signs. Bush league.

It is considered bush/uncool for the hitter to be glancing back at the catcher to see his signal to the pitcher. Runner on second sees the same signals, no problem.

Pickoff to 1st a little errant and hits 1B coach in ribs. Probably would've ended that noise real quick like.

If I can figure out your sign simply by looking at it lol its not really a sign then is it lol that's a signal
Used to pitched in hs. I only could throw three balls lol be for each game we came up with new signs. Took all of half a minute lol

We used the same first name/last name on that Cubs team. No one cares though because we won 3 games in 2 years.

It's totally ok. Part of the game.
