That's just the kind of captain of industry Joe Francis is.

Bands like Stanford's (Rice, Princeton, insert pretentious ivy league school here) all think they are being unique, novel, funny, or following the beat of a different drummer even though several band have been doing their act for a long time. They make potty jokes or try to cleverly insult the opponents fanbase.
What's admirable about that? Many bands used to play the fight song of the visiting school. Maybe I'm old fashioned but a bunch of students just standing around making jokes and playing shitty music just isn't that impressive to me.
ETA: don't misunderstand me. I'm not offended by them, just don't get why they get so much love.

I like their performances but they can't tackle for shite.
Here is some recently found raw video from the 1982 Cal Stanford game... LINK

some people don't like marching bands and mocking that institution is always welcome

Dorks dressing up in nutcracker uniforms and doing sequenced marches while tooting their horns is serious business.

like i said in the BHS-West Monroe thread, i had a lot of respect for WM's band b/c their unis were just jeans and a school pullover

The practice, precision and coordination required is tremendous. I won't say members of a good band are 'athletes," but they're at least close. And bands are tremendously competitive.
Stanford has said, "frick it. We suck and we aren't going to put in the work to change that. Rather we're going to be edgy and ironic (which again makes them hipsters). It would be no different if a traditionally shitty football school went all "Harlem Globetrotters."
It's a free country and they are certainly allowed to be stupid (other than the anti-Catholic shite. If they want to be badasses, lOt them go out there in blackface.) But that's all they'll be: stupid.

That's their schtick. It's what they're known for. They're not trying to win a precision marching competition.

The Stanford band just tries to push the envelope for the sake of pushing the envelope. You can only ride that for so long until you become lame.
Exactly.
IMO, the MOB is better.

Laughed plenty at them, and it's a years-long expert troll job. Just hope they dig the irony that if their team didn't try to be great nobody would give a sh#t about their band.

Eh, when Stanford football sucked, people still knew about the band.

It is to a lot of people.
People laugh about Stanford's band but I bet you most people wouldn't trade their schools traditions for the nothing-is-sacred attitude of Stanford's. Believe it or not, there's nothing wrong with taking what you do seriously. Tenner fans seem to get a kick out of the Power T, Ohio State fans seem to like Script Ohio, I like the Big A at Arkansas.

That's not how things are done around here.
I know, but taking a controversial position on an issue just to piss people off and give them a reason to argue isn't my thing - i'm too laid back for that. And if I'm ever in the mood for that stuff, I go to the Politics board.

I see where you're coming from. I have been in a college band and seen Ohio State's band in person. I don't agree that Stanford's band sucks and couldn't do the traditional style if they wanted to. What is stupid is that they mock how other bands are meanwhile several other bands are doing the exact same act that they are doing(Rice or Princeton). I totally respect what some bands do. DCI and the best college bands definitely require skill and coordination.

not really.

They've always cracked me up, ever since I was a kid and saw them. If you can't laugh at them, or endure a joke aimed at your team gracefully, your sense of humor may be poor.

I like scatter bands, but lately, Stanford's band's antics seem to be a little heavy handed for my taste. I prefer more of the wink wink, nudge nudge type of stuff, not the over the top for the sake of being over the top type stuff.

Cracking on polygamy is funny, but the nun thing at ND was over the top. They have always poked fun at SC for being "spoiled rich kids" and there are a few at SC, but the reality is quite different, so the irony makes it funny to me.
