I don't think anyone would have argued against that at the start either..... Players can be "fat" in virtually every sport even. Is this guy a player or fan?

Shut up. He said out of shape.
He said fat/out of shape, which implies he thinks they are one in the same. You can't be out of shape to possess the abilities needed to compete at a pro level in golf, baseball, etc. An out of shape person cannot physically execute a pro level golf swing, nor can they execute a major league pitching motion.
ETA: An example from this thread, this guy...
is more than likely more athletic than just about everyone on this board, but carries more fat than a lot here.

Wasn't really either at that point.
That was at his de facto testimonial (farewell match).

Fat guys in sports is on the downward slide except for football. And even there, I suppose, one could make the argument that the o-line and d-line aren't really fat or out of shape, just enormous.
But baseball players are in far better shape today than they were even twenty years ago. Golf is the same way. I think even bowlers are starting to move away from being the fat fricks we usually associate with bowling alleys to the weaselly, Oakley wearing douchebags who yell at the crowd to shut up.

Fat guys with skills are my favorite to watch. Here's to you Kirby Puckett.

CC is a really good athlete, Just like pretty much every person that can throw 95. CC even had offers to play college football.
ETA: weighing a lot is also beneficial for pitchers. Guys who weigh more can usually generate more velocity.

Way too many different definitions of "out of shape" being tossed around I feel. I think most associate being "in shape" with cardio/respiratory fitness and being able to physically exert yourself. I wouldn't exactly put the starting/stopping of pitchers and golfers into this. They are highly skilled athletes, but like I said before could they do ANYTHING where their heart rate is continuously elevated to a moderate level for a half hour?

Shaquille was pretty big in his 30's Oliver Miller as well....
Shaq was no wear near the same level as Oliver Miller.

I think you underestimate the amount of training one does to get to that level.
It would also really depend on your idea of a decent mile. I wouldn't expect a world class runner to be able to hit a 95mph fastball 400+ ft, does that make the runner any less of an athlete?

Of course they could. I'm no athlete, and I can go out and play soccer at the Parade Grounds for 1.5 hours whenever I feel like it.
Do you guys really think these guys just sit around and do nothing and perform at these levels? It's pretty comical.

Why does everyone care about this so much?
I always see people talk about it.
