Back in the early to mid 2000s they were consistently an elite team but ever since 2011 they haven't done shite. It's not like California is missing talent and it shouldn't be hard to convince a poor kid to come to Los Angeles.

A combination of bad athletic directors and bad head coaches. If they get a coach somewhere in the good to elite range, they will be back to elite status.

They got caught up in one of the largest pay for play schemes of modern college football...

I think people underestimate just how fricking good Pete Carrol was there. They hadn’t been good in 20 years before he got there, and he turned them into a damn powerhouse. Sure, they had success in their history, but like Michigan and Notre Dame, it’s not their birthright anymore you be great. They need a great coach. That was Pete Carrol.

Pretty much this. They kept hiring guys from the Pete Carroll tree hoping to duplicate his success. Unfortunately for them, those guys were Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian.

The most underappreciated part of Carroll at USC was how good his teams were in big games. When they lost, it was against a team like Oregon State or Stanford. The only big game I remember them losing was when VY went God-mode on them.

Big games?

What big games did usc play exactly? OU in 04 yes (vacated for cheating)
Texas 05 which usc lost

USC had a bloated record during Baghdad Pete’s corrupt, cowardly tenure (Pete the cheat ran away weeks before ncaa sanctions hit — why didn’t the media hammer him for his cowardice?). Playing ooc games against terrible auburn and va tech teams, not to mention a downtrodden notre dame program, was the meat of an otherwise pathetic pac 10 schedule.

That 2005 Notre Dame team wasn’t bad.

Rhema, Quinn, Carlson, Samardzija, Zbikowski were all on that team.

They beat 2004 VT in DC. They won the ACC and almost beat Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. Cal in 2004 was also a big game (Aaron Rodgers team that was undefeated and ranked in top 10 when they played). 2003 Auburn was a top 10 team when USC shut them out in JHS to open the season. They routinely sodomized Big Ten teams in the Rose Bowl back when it still meant something. 2005 UCLA was 10-1 and ranked in the top 10 when USC beat them 66-19.

During the 7 years from 2002-2008, SC played 35 games vs top 25 opponents. That's an average of 5 a season.

Criticizing them for SOS doesn't hold a ton of water.

Like I said in the other thread, I don't get your hate for SC. My team competes against them on a yearly basis and they aren't nearly as deep in my head as they obviously are in yours.

Usc also demolished Arkansas in back to back years. I believe the year usc hung 50 on them in Arkansas, the razorbacks won the sec west. That was also one of Carroll’s worst teams.

Why do you ask when you know the answer isn't going to change how you feel?

SC won every one of their bowls against a top ten opponent those 7 years except for the 05 Texas loss.

2007 Oregon/USC when Oregon still had Dennis Dixon was big, both teams only had 1 loss. Oregon won.
