a sport, to me, should be defined as a competition involving more than 1 individual (or teams of individuals) in which the competitors (or certain individuals on the team) experience either continuous, or short transient periods of an elevated (70-80% of max) heart rate SECONDARY to physical activity, and not due to chemicals (ie, caffeine) or certain biomolecules (ie, hormones)

So banging your mom is a sport? Got it.

I didn't read most of the thread, but are the people arguing that defense is a key component of a sport saying that track and field is not a sport? Rowing? Any winter sport?

You need competition in a sport. Getting granular on the logistics is ignorant.

If the conditions of the playing surface and the climate of the event don't have any effect on performance, why do southern or dome football teams have trouble in Green Bay and Boston, or pitchers with LH hitters in Yankee Stadium, or clay vs. grass vs. hard surface courts.

Somehow?

By calling them a jackass? Bending their 9 iron?

Getting in their head by playing well is about the best you can do. Having a good "offense" is the best "defense" is your answer?

ETA I don't feel you elaborated very much by saying get in their head somehow.

You must not play golf

I love golf and play every chance I get.

Guess what? A bunker has never blown sand directly into my eyes while I'm shooting. A lake has never shifted 30 yards forward to take my ball. There aren't any random stakes that shoot out of the ground like a wack-a-mole and stop my ball.

I know you're trying to be creative and more clever than everyone, but an inanimate tract of land isn't playing defense on you. To suggest that grass/water/sand is "playing defense" is quite frankly pretty stupid. Are there varying degrees of difficulty? Duh, of course. Some courses may be wide open and ripe for a below par round while some may be damn near impossible where you're lucky to shoot double digits. That doens't mean that your score 100% depends on how YOU and only YOU shoot that day.

Oh, sorry. That was my educated opinion. I just figured there was no other reasonable or logical explanation.

Well, you've already proven your opinions are very uneducated and based in, well, nothing. So I'll just disregard that comment.

You don't think athleticism should be factored in the definition of a sport?

Are you retarded?

Well most people here think golf is a sport and I wouldn't call Jon Daly very athletic.

Would you, retard?

No I havent. But I've never seen any defense in match play either. You can play aggressively or conservatively, but I still don't see how you can be defensive on a golf course.

Outside of running over someone's ball with the cart, or something like that when you at with your buddies.

I think prostitution takes more physical skill than some sports people are considered athletes in, but I would consider golf a sport.

It's physical skill, mental skill, the weather comes into play, it's a competition.

Disrupting their concentration somehow and making them not hit the ball to the best of their ability.

There's no guarantee of that. What if the person doesn't listen or mentally blocks you out, then you've done nothing. It is 100% up to that person swinging if they will hit a good shot or not.

If someone blocks your shot attempt in basketball, there is no mentally focusing and blocking them out...that ball is not going to score.

I think that actually using some thought and forming my own opinion, rather than relying on "the fricking DICTIONARY" as you claim, shows a more educated opinion.

He possesses superior dexterity, and the athleticism needed to contort and move his body in such a way as to hit a ball 350 yards requires athleticism.

Daly also played football on a state champion team in high school.

I'd wager he is more of an athlete than you are.

Right...but golf takes skill and it's been around a while so it's a sport. Those are the rules ya know.

Ok then. What is your opinion based on, factually? Are you saying that basing an opinion on facts is uneducated?
