Mayfield High kicked my alma mater (Graves County) arse again for the 14th year in a row. The story though is Washington (Massillon, OH) lost, so now Mayfield is tied with them for 3rd most wins nationally at 920. I’d say something good to report in light of what my town has been through the last 9 months.

Not bad for a 2A school. They’re not known as the best small school program in the country for nothing.

1. Valdosta (GA)
2. Male (Louisville)
3. Mayfield
- Washington (Massillon, OH)
5. Highlands (Ft. Thomas, KY)

Male is only six wins away from passing Valdosta to.

They are known to be better than John Curtis?

John Curtis has 26 State Titles and was named 2012 National Champion. I think they win this argument lol.

Yea. Curtis and Evangel back in the day would have beat them pretty bad. Both small Christian schools. Curtis beat one of the best 6A teams in Alabama one year

Point taken.

I find it hilarious that Kentucky has 3 of the top 5 winningest programs in the nation. Mayfield has boosters scattered all over the country that donate. They’ve never to my knowledge put out top D1 talent, but they’ve won a lot of games since 1919.

Yep. It was the year Hoover had the TV show “two a days.” I think John Parker Wilson was their quarterback that year.

They showed extended highlights of every game on the show, most games lasting an entire episode….

I think they should like 3 total clips of the Curtis game because Curtis whooped that arse so bad I think one of the clips was a joe McKnight punt return touchdown.

Not to take anything from Male, I don’t know what their competition quality is but if you play scrubs year in and out you should rack up some wins.

in 1953 or so Mayfield won the open state championship of basketball.
last small school to do it.
I heard a Mayfield player at halftime of a Murray game.
the coach showed globetrotter film and said play like that.

Good thing Curtis doesn't recruit football players.
Everyone that goes to Curtis is involved in sports.

It is basically a small scale IMG. It was started for purely sports purposes and money making purposes.

Male is a big boy school that plays big boy football in a really tough district and region; they also play a lot of elite out of state schools. They’re probably not even the best program historically in their own district (that would be St. X), but they’ve been playing football since the 1890’s and have been good for the vast majority of that time. There have been a fair amount of NFL players come out of there (Michael Bush and Chris Redman to name two).

Ft. Thomas Highlands plays pretty good schedules but they’re a step or two down in class and in a relatively weak district and Mayfield plays minnow ball. Kentucky 2A ball is…not great.

JT has 606 (according to the internet) and became the Coach 6-7 years into the schools inception. He went 0-10 his first year. I believe the school was founded in 1965 or so.

I'm not trying to toot their horn because you know how stacked the deck was in terms of talent for them for many years but hard to argue with the results.
