It is so stupid to me that a ball can be in the penalty box yet we still have offsides enforcement

I agree. I said this in the soccer board (didn't get as many up votes): LINK

They do have that rule. Been around since the beginning pretty much.

This might blow your mind, the offsides rule was actually put into place to increase scoring. If there wasn’t offsides the defense would stay in line with the deepest offensive player. With the offside rule in place the defense can push up a high line to play more attacking football while giving up the opportunity to be getting beat in behind from a lesser team.

Its a lot more complex and tactical game than the common sports fan would realize. However I do agree the ticky tack VAR offsides calls have had a negative impact on the game

I like this idea.

This is what people don't understand. The 2005 offside rule change made the sport way better.

American ignorance of the offside rule dates back to the dark ages of soccer, when the USA never qualified for the World Cup, when few games were on tv, and when the broadcasts weren’t very technologically advanced

Now that those days are over, most people have watched a Premier League or World Cup match at one time or another (it wasn’t even on US tv for a long time), and most people now understand it compared to the old days

I disagree. Basketball is so damn painful to watch. Everything is a foul. Not to mention, in soccer, if you’re fouled, and you still have the advantage, you play on. Basketball needs to adopt that rule.

Yep, which makes this thread popping up every 4 years all the more hilarious.

I’ve never seen that in my life. I see several times where a player is fouled to prevent a fast break and it’s called and the game is stopped

In soccer, play on

What's the basketball rule then?

Because everytime a dunk or layup is waived off because there was was a foul on the floor seems to suggest they don't have an advantage rule.

Players don't get ejected for a clear path foul in basketball.

In soccer you can get red carded and the team has to play a man down the rest of the game.

I kinda wish somebody would play a game (hockey too) without offsides, just once, so we could put this dumb idea to rest.

Clear path is rare. I’m talking pass out while getting fouled, the play is stopped even though the teammate is slamming it.

Garbage

Clear path is all they have. Every time I watch basketball I see multiple plays where the advantage rule should be used.

Almost like hockey? Be the first to cross a touch line with the ball then everyone is free to be anywhere. Totally changes the strategy of the game, but definitely would lead to more goals.

I wouldn't mind seeing that in an exhibition game to see how the flow of the game would be.
