Soccer fans- Freddy Adu?

What happened to him? Wasn't he supposed to be the best American player ever? Is he coming along and I just haven't heard about it?

It is impossible for him to live up to the extraordinary hype surrounding him. He's only 19 yrs old so it's too early to say what he's going to be. He's currently owned by Benfica in Portugal, but it on loan to AS Monaco in France. He's a very gifted player, his dribbling skills are probably unmatched by any other American; he just has a hard time getting into games. He's only played in 9 games this year. He's not getting very many chances for USMNT, which I think is stupid. He should at least be on the bench for the team.
IMO, the best young American player is Jozy Altidore. 19 yr old striker owned by Villarreal, currently on loan to Xerez.

I think Adu is very talented. However, he is very small. Probably about 5-8, 145 pounds or so. With soccer increasingly relying on size and strength rather than ball skills, undersized talents like Adu have had a hard time adjusting to the game.
A bunch of Argentine players who were even more highly regarded than Freddy (Pablo Aimar, Javier Saviola, and especially Andres D'Alessandro) have flopped in Europe for the most part, so it might be difficult for Freddy to become a superstar.
However, if he has the right mental make-up, I think he is definitely talented enough to be a decent starter for a good European team. I also agree that he should definitely be playing in more US national games, but I hate Bob Bradley's roster selection.

quote:Jozy is the best option up front for the U.S. no doubt. Fast, accurate and can get into space. I wish we could pair him up with Brian McBride of 12 years ago. We need a guy who can play with his back to goal and get the ball in to Jozy or maybe Landicakes going forward from midfield.

If Bradley is at all willing to give him a real chance, I think Kenny Cooper could become the kind of player McBride used to be in his prime.

i love watching Cooper play and can't wait til he gets a full opportunity...a guy with his size and physicality up front with Altidore's speed, they could be a dynamic duo

Yeah, Kenny Cooper certainly looks the part.

Adu is 19....besides Kobe, LaBron, and Kaka name another 19 year old who is/was at their top that young. Give him a few more years...
And yes, Bradly needs to use him more.

Anyone know what happened to, or ever heard of Clint Mathis? I know he had a stint on the US world cup team in ’02 but don’t remember him playing much. I used to try to unsuccessfully mark him back in the day when he played youth for the Atlanta Lightening. It was kind of my claim to fame.

Nah, it just means you're not national team material. No shame in that. Keep in mind that somewhere somebody is also Brian Ching's bitch.

nah, owen was close, injuries kept him from ever reaching his full potential
Rooney still hasn't finished developing, and he won't reach his prime for another few years, he was regarded as one of the top players but to me he wasn't there yet, that and his game completely changed since then, at 19 he played angry, very very physical and cussing at anything and everything, SAF slapped him around after WC06, now he has a more mature game and has added a heavy dose of assist into his game, some say too much, that he needs to take more shots, but he still has a way to go

Remember, that all the media frenzy about Freddy Adu took place five years ago, or so, when he was barely a teenager.

his biggest problem is that he never grew up. he's still like 5-6

it's not like he has no worth, but i bet he'd be getting a lot more PT across the board if he were 5-10, 180
