It's the worst regular season on the planet.

There are years of qualifying that would be the regular season. This is basically the first round of the playoffs. 160ish countries didn't make it through.

There are 211 recognized national associations so 48 making the world cup isn't egregious.
a lot of those 211 are tiny countries Jesuit could beat

#1Argentina, you're right
#2 France vs #17 Senegal
#3 Spain, you're right but one of their games gave one of the best storylines yet

He isn't even right about these 3.

France vs Norway
Spain vs Uruguay
Argentina vs Austria

Those should be exciting matchups.

Its diluted but not as much as you would think. The difference between the 32nd and 48th ranked team in the tourney isnt very big and changes match to match much like college basketball or football

The amount of teams isn't the problem in this iteration of the tournament.

The problem is that you play three weeks worth of group matches to just push more than half of the field to the knockout phase.

If the field were 64 teams where you had 16 groups of 4 with the top 2 in each group advancing to the Round of 32, the group matches would go back to meaning more again like it did from 1998-2022.

Any time a handful of third place teams advance in the group, the format is dumb.

World Cup thus far is a huge success, for fans and non fans alike.

Sucks for the NYT that they tried to throw a World Cup boycott and everyone showed up.

Yup, but if it means Cape Verde gets in, I'm down. But I am to the bone!

Without expansion, we likely wouldn't have gotten to witness Tunisia shite-cannong their coach after the first match, so there is that.

I think by the time they get to the round of 16 it will look about like it would have looked before.

Not die hard fan, but I’m enjoying the World Cup. The more teams the better. It’s the WORLD Cup. The better teams will be there in the end. Enjoying watching the different countries partying off the field and on the field the matches are entertaining.
