Yeah it wasn't just Flacco. They told Boldin to GTFO in order to keep Ellerbe....now they failed with their No. 1 priority
If the Ravens were paying Flacco 16 million instead of 20 million they would have a lot more flexibility.
Boldin was due to make 6 million and they wanted to keep him if he restructured. So yes, it probably was mostly the Flacco contract making things tougher for the Ravens across the board.

Lewis missed 10 games, Boldin hasn't been that productive the last 6 seasons and Reed is pretty close to being done. Kruger was productive, but Upshaw had a pretty solid rookie year and is a cheap replacement. Ellerbe is the only big loss, they have nothing in the middle now.
The Ravens, like the Steelers, have been pretty damn good at knowing when to let people go and finding good replacements.

Dannell Ellerbe's new deal with the #Dolphins worth $35M over 5 years, per source. Wowza.

boldin- led them in catches and yards
ed reed led them in picks
kruger led them in sacks
upshaw is good but not the pass rusher Kruger is.
ray lewis was a team leader....no, THE team leader

Glad to see him getting paid.

letting 1 or 2 guys go is not the same as losing 5 key players on a team with little depth and money
and its easy to fill in players off the street and put them around future HOF'er like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, and pro bowlers like Suggs and Ngata.

I cant wait for the "Watch out for the Dolphins in the AFC East!!!" Threads/artcles etc, and then promptly watch them go 7-9

just because a guy was hot in the playoffs and won a super bowl doesn't mean he is worth 20 mil. Hell Drew Brees isn't worth 20 mil, but the thing with Flacco is he isn't an all pro quarterback, he is so inconsistent. For clarification no player is worth a 1/6 of the salary cap.

Well, it wasn't too long ago that Scott was leaving and that was a big deal. And the Ravens just plugged the hole with Suggs. But the defense was pretty f'n mediocre this year, and a lot of that has to do with too many old players. you have to turn the page, and I have no problem with finally letting Ray and Reed walk. Great players, but their best years are behind them.
Ravens have been a consistently great team at drafting and identifying talent. Suggs slid in the draft because he was a tweener, and the Ravens scored big on Kruger. Their whiffs have tended to be in free agency. I'd much rather the team let guys walk and draft to replace them, as it suits the front office's strengths. I'm less confident in their ability to sign quality veterans.

I am not saying they have had trouble filling holes; but this is more than just 1 or 2 holes to fill. and Bart Scott played ILB, i dont think Suggs replaced him.
people keep saying Newsome has a plan; well his plan was for Boldin to take a paycut, then for them to re-sign Ellerbee, and in the back of his head he hopes no one ponies up the money for Ed Reed and they are able to keep him.
and while Kruger just got overpaid, it has to hurt losing him to a division rival.
Newsome is one of the best in the business, but i believe he had a plan, and IMO he's probably 0-3 with the potential of being 0-4 depending on what Reed does.
I think his plan was to re-load and continue to make runs at it. At this point it is starting to lean more to a rebuild, depending on how he fills these holes. As you said the DEF wasn't that great last year. They are old, but now they have lost 3 of their best players, with no real replacements in sight.

I already said losing Ellerbe and Kruger hurt. But the other losses really aren't that significant. Those are the two big losses. He's more like 0 for 2 instead of 0 for 4. They've had time to plan for losing Reed and Lewis, which I think is the plan.
And I do hate the Flacco signing.

Wow, it's so crazy a Super Bowl champ would lose players to free agency. That never happens
Posted on 3/12/13 at 7:58 pm to jimithing11
$35 million is a ridiculous overpayment for Ellerbe. When will teams learn that all of these Ravens defensive players who hit free agency are a product of the system? Edgerton Hartwell, Bart Scott, Adalius Thomas, Gary Baxter, Kim Herring, etc..... It's always been about the core group of players like Lewis, Reed and currently Suggs and Ngata. The greatness of those players rubbed off on their supporting cast and made them look a lot better than they really are.

Ellerbe is the 13th highest paid MLB now, that doesn't seem like a overpay.
