So a Horsecollar tackle is allowed on a qb inside the pocket?

Who knew? I certainly didn't. So if someone is injured it's allowed as long the qb is in the pocket? For those that didn't watch the Cincy/Baltimore game the announcers said that it is allowed inside the pocket and no flag was thrown so I guess so. Joe Burrow was sacked on the play.

I didn’t know that either, but here is the official rule from the NFL. Rule 12, Section 2, Article 16:
NFL Operations
quote:
ARTICLE 16. HORSE-COLLAR TACKLE
No player shall grab the inside collar of the back or the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, or grab the jersey at the name plate or above, and pull the runner toward the ground. This does not apply to a runner who is in the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket.
Note: It is not necessary for a player to pull the runner completely to the ground in order for the act to be illegal. If his knees are buckled by the action, it is a foul, even if the runner is not pulled completely to the ground.
Penalty: For a Horse-Collar Tackle: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down.

I do not agree on that rule. I guess a QB is usually not moving very fast inside a pocket, so it is safer for that tacke to be made. Idk.

It is not called while in the pocket. However if he is trying to escape the pocket and iOS brought down like that it should be called.

Yeah they had to make it a penalty because DB Joey Browner used to horsecollar tackle players by grabbing them and drop dead weighted which would stop them in their tracks, but sometimes he'd roll across their legs and injure them.

Rule makes sense. Most of what makes a horse collar tackle dangerous is yanking someone back while they are running forward. The force that puts on knees and backs going the wrong way is dangerous. Yanking some back who is stationary or barely moving doesn’t have the same likelihood of injury. Most likely just going to put them safely on their arse.
Add no horse collar to all the other protections a QB get and you are going to make them virtually impossible to tackle legally. Can’t hit them high, can’t hit them low, can’t land on them, can’t throw them to the ground, etc etc.

Wow thanks for finding that for this thread. Unbelievable that it's allowed inside the pocket and they talk about protecting the qb's. Lol

Happens every few years. Not often that it comes across
Couple of quirks like that that people don’t usually think about, such as illegal contact becomes legal once the QB leaves the pocket
I’m not sure if that play would’ve been enough to get a flag anyway. A part of that rule that is often over looked is that there is you need a forceful movement to get that. Just grasping in that area is not automatically a horse collar

That’s incorrect
The horse collar rule came into effect bc of Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams
I think the horse collar rule is one of the dumbest in football. Like most of the player safety rules

Joe Theisman was in the pocket. Horsecollar should apply every where.
That's like saying face mask doesn't count in the pocket..stupid.
Burrow didn't know either.

Yep this, illegal contact being legal, and holding is kind of allowed on rip moves always confuse people. My favorite is when a player blows up a guy running a crosser on the line of scrimmage and people yell it's PI.

I mean Theismann was not injured on a horse collar. LT never pulled back. You can tackle people from behind.
