Ten yards has always seemed like a pretty stiff punishment to me. I think five yards would be more appropriate.

I don’t know why you get to repeat the down on some of these penalties though. In some cases, it’s not even that punitive if you get an extra down.

I think the most egregious is the auto first down when it’s defensive holding. It can be 3rd and 25 and a holding call will extend the drive. Just make it 5 yards and repeat the down. If it happens two plays in a row, maybe then an auto first down.

The reason is because defenders would be much better off holding if it were 3rd and 25 and their penalty didn't cause a 1st down. It would be used as an exploit.

It's the most convenient penalty in football...on both sides of the ball. It happens every play, and can be called whenever the refs need to. They will go games without calling it all the time. Need to kill the fun? Holding. Need to prop up the favorite? Holding. Scrap it, and come up with something better.

Hopefully they leave the rule super ambigous to allow it to be subjectively interpreted by a ref in a manner he is right now matter which way he calls it

The most furious ones are when its on the complete opposite side of the field the runner was on. Watching a game a couple weekends ago and there's a jet sweep to the right, goes for maybe a 20-25 yard gain before running out of bounds. The WR on the far left side of the field grabbed a jersey for a split second and the run comes back.

The other team can always decline the penalty if counting the down is more advantageous than the penalty yards with a replay of the down

In a game where the offense is given every strategic advantage from a rules perspective, and the defense is put at an extreme disadvantage, the 10 yard holding penalty is sacred ground.

I’m saying you should lose the yards and the down. Like when you throw a forward psss beyond the line of scrimmage it’s 5 yards and a loss of a down I think. More penalties should be like that.

i'd actually like to bring back the 5 yard and 10 yard facemask. sometime incidental facemasks shouldn't be an automatic 15 yarder.

I agree with OP that 10 yards is too harsh. Should be 7 yards

Holding used to be 15 yards. But it was almost an automatic drive.killer, so they reduced it to 10.
