winning your division should just give you a playoff spot, but it shouldn't assure you of an automatic top 4 seed

Yes, Chargers/Chiefs is a prime example.

Have agreed for probably a decade on this. I have no problem with a division winner getting a spot but in no way do they automatically deserve to host or automatically get a bye for that matter.

It's almost insane that a team with 2 to 4 more losses gets a week off and then a home game while the team with the superior season gets to go travel for 3 weeks.

that was my thinking they should both be in the top 4 regardless of who wins the West

No reason why the chargers shouldn’t have a bye.

it needs to stay the way it is. As long as you are playing unbalanced schedules, then you cannot base everything on overall W/L records.

First thing they need to do is re-do the divisions along regional lines. Then, seeding by record. The Seahawks a few years ago hosting a wildcard game at 7-9 was a damn travesty.

But it is broke. A possible 13-3 Chargers team shouldn’t be a WC team. Same way a 7-9 or 8-8 team shouldn’t have home field advantage over a 10+ win team.

Giving all divisional winners playoff spots is fair. Rewarding them with better seeds over clearly better teams is retarded.

Punishing stronger divisions for the benefit of the weaker ones is already done, no need to double down on it.

I think the NFL should copy CFB.

You DON'T win your division or Conference and you are assured of a spot in the Final.

So if the NFL was like CFB...The Saints would be the #1 seed and have to play in the NFC Conference Champ game to go to the Super Bowl...against the Rams.

While the Carolina Panthers, their division partners in second place would be the #2 seed and get a bye to the Super Bowl because they didn't win shite on the field and get to bypass the Conference Championship playoffs because they didn't make them.

That would be the NFL equivalent of 2011.

And nobody in the NFL would put up with that.

But everyone puts up with it in CFB all the time from fans to the media.

Nope. If KC wins their division over a team as good as LA (or vice versa), they’ve earned a spot in a playoff bracket that makes it unlikely for them to have to face that team a third time.

If you can’t win your division after facing a team twice, that third shot against them will be hard to get.

Current system is awesome, and the idea of changing its sucks and isn’t manly.

Scrap divisions altogether. Play the other 15 teams in the conference and 1 non-conference opponent. Top 6 in each conference make the playoffs.

If they’re that much better, they’ll make quick work of their opponents on their way to the conference title game.

Careless this to say. There are five divisions comprised of nothing but traditional rivals who won’t be separated. Only the NFC South & West and AFC South have teams who could switch divisions.

Not a single one of us will come up with an idea that is better than what they have now.

Furthermore, eliminating wild cards and just taking the four division winners is better than any other alternative proposed in this or any other thread.

All 3 major sports are way outdated as far as playoff seeding

As much as teams like to pimp it, winning a division has become meaningless outside of the way they seed playoffs, which in itself is flawed.
