There's no good way to do this and make everyone happy since each team plays less more than half of the other teams in the conference in any given year (9 out of 15 possible opponents). At least within the division everyone plays the roughly the same schedule.
For the 2018 season:
Out of 13 opponents faced, the Saints will have 10 in common with the Panthers, and they play each other twice. So, 14 of the 16 games are directly useful for evaluating their relative performance.
Out of 13 opponents faced, the Saints will have 4 in common with the Bears, and they don't play each other. So only 4 of the 16 games are directly useful for evaluating their relative performance.
It is much easier to compare success within a division vs. across it, so I think the current setup is about the best we'll do for now.

They should get rid of divisions altogether

eliminating wild cards and just taking the four division winners
Should have done this when they went to 8 divisions, IMO.

Some of the points/ideas in this thread are good ones. Others are not because they are short-sighted.
Do not forget that teams in poor divisions play those teams twice, for 3/8ths of their season, while teams in strong divisions play the good teams 3/8ths of their season.

But it is broke. A possible 13-3 Chargers team shouldn’t be a WC team. Same way a 7-9 or 8-8 team shouldn’t have home field advantage over a 10+ win team.
It's rare this happens. It does, but pretty rare.
Also, I still value division winners. A record difference like this can simply be the product of a better division, etc..
I wouldn't want to see it changed, because I love the reward of winning your division.
