You have kids out there taking out loans and leaving college with $50,000 worth of debt ... yet every single kid on an athletic scholarship leaves the university with no debt and a scholarship where they are free to make money in the real world. (assuming they don't drop out)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is false. There's got to be kids on the golf team or swimming and diving who don't leave completely debt free.

Also, football players aren't allowed to have jobs to make spending money. What's wrong with giving them a stipend? Tuition, room and board, and a meal plan doesn't cover all of the expenses of the college experience.

BC some 3rd party will pay you appropriate compensation later for your services is not justification for paying less now. Also this has nothing to do with whether or not players or properly compensated with their value to the University.

That's paying the player to come. It would be rampant, and whoever paid the most, got the players.

as opposed to now? You don't think the top players would still go to the same top schools?

I think the amount of compensation for that person is pretty close to his worth to the company

I think 80,000 worth of scholarship money, free books, gear, meal plans, and benefits compared to other students is pretty close to the worth of the company as a whole ... considering that the majority of players really only make a two year impact on most programs.

I think they would go to some of the same schools, but it would become ridiculous

Duke might actually be a power in Football

Great players take out insurance to prevent that.

Sam Bradford completely tore up his shoulder and was the first overall pick.

just sayin.

for most yes, but like I said saying that NO player has an argument that he is giving more value to the University than he is receiving by way of scholarship etc is disingenuous.

Are you saying the University of Florida didn't make money off Tim Tebow choosing that school? That what they gave Tebow in scholarship was equal to the value they received?

still "wasting" 3 years of prime money making years

Another thing, when they show the One Shining Moment every year at the Final Four, and show Laettner's shot, does he get a check from the NCAA using his likeness? What about Warren Morris every single year come CWS time?

If anything you should be blaming the NFL not the NCAA.

I agree about Tebow but he's also the exception to the rule. An entity won't and shouldn't make rules based on the exception.

And at the same token, i think Florida football prepared him well enough to be drafted highly and make millions. Sounds like Florida paid him back to me ...

The players could also form a union and demand a larger percentage of the pie--since they are bringing it in, of course. And, if they get too greedy, the chancellor can lock them out of football and school, too. Then they can go get a manual labor job and support their families the old fashion way and we can go back to watching baseball in the fall like the "good ole days."

This is different. Post graduation i think players should be paid for such things. However, i think a player should have to graduate as an incentive.

If you allow this, then unscrupulous boosters will pay athletes for endorsements as a way of getting around rules against paying athletes. Come to LSU and I will pay you $100,000 to endorse Joe's chicken shack on a poster, for instance.

just try to keep it unrelated to the school/boosters

For the 3 year rule sure, but NFL has very little to do with NCAA and schools selling jerseys, and video games.

Even if the NFL allowed immediate entry out of HS that doesn't mean the NCAA wouldn't profit off athletes. These are not the same arguments

You were talking about the exceptional athlete. Surely a middle of the road athlete doesn't deserve anything more than the scholarship money and benefits ... i think you'd agree on that.

The schools shouldn't pay them, I don't see why they should not be allowed to sign with an agent

I said this a while back and virtually everyone attacked me for it.

Of course there was no actual well thought out response on why it was such a horrible idea, just the usual.
