Athletes do currently get pretty good stipends fwiw. Guy posted on here before that either he or his friend played a non-revenue sport and they were rolling in a few hundred for a game weekend on the road.

However, I wouldn't mind if college athletes got "paid" a yearly amount from the athletic department, with which they could do whatever they pleased, and did away with scholarships

Would this yearly amount be roughly the same amount as they get now with tuition, room and board, and all that good stuff?

If athletes got paid, but had to provide for their own expenses and still had to maintain all of the academic requirements of the general student population, then go for it. But you know the idiots who have no financial planning skills won't make it.

That's the issue as to why what I said wouldn't work, because it would be up to the respective university's athletic dept. I'm very against athletes getting paid to play.

If they get paid, then:

1) all expenses, tuition, uniforms, books, housing, transportation, health ins, etc. should be deducted from their paycheck, as a benefit

ii) they must sign a contract whereby they cannot leave early to be paid by any other team (professional leagues included)

c) they cannot have outside employment. which is just another way of hiking up their value

IV) Can only be paid for one sport, even if they play two. another way of increasing their value

E) Season ticket holders get to claim them as dependents on their taxes, since we will be funding their education/living expenses/healthcare for 4-5 yrs

This is a really good point. At least with the stipends they are getting money that is reserved for a certain area (at least if I understand this correctly).

If they are just given one big chunk of money, a lot of stupid kids would find a way to blow all of that really fast.

No. There are professional leagues for them if they want to be paid.

They should get paid for the video games, their clips being shown, etc. etc. AFTER they leave school.
Stipulations would have to be put in place, probably graduate or play/attend school for at least 3 years; something along those lines.

schools don't force academic scholarship students to graduate or pay back the money, do they?

I wasn't suggesting they have to pay back their scholarships or anything. I was saying the only way they should be able to participate in some sort of revenue sharing program was to graduate and complete their eligibility. Only at that point, would they be able to receive their compensation.
