I imagine people don’t want to devout the time to ref a game

Even though it’s probably one game a day

Depends on the sport. I ref high school soccer in Alabama. We almost always do 2 games a day, often 3+ days a week.

Is it possible to get into refereeing with odd hour job? I work 24 on and 48 off. So every 3rd Friday I’ll be at work so I’ve never tried b/c of that. Would say football, let me ref as much as possible on days off, but when I work have a replacement? This would be north La.

It's not rare that I'll do games 5 out of 7 days in a week, and almost all of those days will have two games.

it's affecting basketball as well.

Spoke with a head official for a parish up here in North LA. Says he has to regularly send two officials instead of three to HS basketball games. Says that the guys pay is not worth the travel and the abuse they take. Pay has been cut and sometimes the travel expenses are not covered.

I'll often have a week where I do games on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. During the week, there will be a varsity or JV game at 5:30, followed by a Varsity game at 7:30. Sometimes there will be 2 JV games. On Saturday, they tend to start at 9 or 10 AM.

My favorite ref growing up as a kid was just a badass who would yell at a parent if he needed to. He missed calls, but he made them confidently. And he would even admit that mistakes were possible, but no amount of yelling would change his mind. The players loved him because he shut our parents up, and the parents loved him because he was so damn confident, and would even crack jokes.

That said, I'm not sure I'm capable of his amazingness. Thus, I don't ref.

I don't see why not. Most associations don't work set crews, although I think Shreveport is one that does. Even so, there would probably be plenty of sub-varsity games to call.

An official should never do this.

I’ll never forget when I was playing HS football watching the refs huddle up and one of them was doing like Brees does before the game pumping them up. I’ve always thought that was awesome, I wonder if that happens often?

We tend to give fist bumps and say "Don't frick up" or "See you in 35/40 (JV plays 35 min halves, V plays 40 min halves)" depending on who is in the crew.

In Ouachita Parish you have Freshman/JV and 6th grade games on Monday. Some 7/8th grade games on Tuesday. Some 7/8th grade games on Thursday. Varsity on Friday. WOYSA-Elementary games on Saturday. You could really supplement your income if you wanted to honestly.

I’m considering getting out of doing windshields as a side. I’m tired of being my own boss I’d take a pay cut but would like to lose the headache of working for myself, all by myself and taking care of answering the phone, advertising, billing, all that shite. Only part I enjoy is actually doing a windshield job but it’s a side gig and nobody wants to do all the office stuff part time and rotating days with my fire dept schedule. Sorry just ranting. I’ve always wanted to ref football and wouldn’t mind umpiring in baseball also.

Yep... a solid "don't frick this up," "see the ball see the ball see the ball," or my personal favorite "piss them both off equally!"

You could ref 6-7 games or more at WOYSA alone on Saturdays. They start early and I believe finish around 3 or so. I used to do it in high school. Just doing Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday would likely yield $200-300 a week I believe. I've handed the check over to the refs before and I'd think it was 50-75 a game for middle school. I would think HS would be more.
