I've never understood the shtick with fried chicken, watermelon, grape drink, waffles and all combinations thereof being a negative stereotype against blacks.

Where did the watermelon thing come from?

Is it because black people tend to gather at parks and whatnot for family picnics more often than white people? And obviously watermelon is a staple at those events.

Playing baseball growing up we had tons of gatherings like that and watermelon was present at every single one of them.

I know it’s a stereotype. But I don’t understand it at all. This is the only thing I can even think of.
