Yeah and what will salaries look like by then?

San Fran might be the smartest ran team in the sport right now and that will become apparent over the next 2-3 years IMO.

AAV for a player of his caliber is very reasonable. They will be in on Soto when he is a FA as well IMO.

The people they have running the team who have a proven history of creating a winner (the Dodgers), beating the juggernaut dodgers in the division with a rag tag group of vets, taking a thin and depleted farm system and turning it into one of the emerging farms in the sport

The AAV is a fair point but I hope contracts don't become any more inflated than they are right now for the sake of having league parity. (They probably will with guys like Steve Cohen)

And ya why are you so convinced the Giants are gonna be top suitors for Soto?

farhan is a terrific executive but I'd put the Dodgers, Braves, Rays, and Indians above them and the only reason I'm not also including the Astros is because of the transition at the top right now

They will be suitors, but beating Cohen or the Yankees for him could prove to be too much for their blood.

Its just team philosophy. They have money, but not Dodgers, Yankees, Mets money, so they aren't going to lock in older players to these long term deals. They are going to rely on vets, platoon players, and farm talent all they can for discounts and any "superstar" contracts they give out will be to guys in their 20's. Soto will be 26 as a UFA. Correa even coming up on his age 28 season fits that bill because he has theoretically not even hit his prime yet.

Oh yeah those are all up there, you're splitting hairs when comparing the ones at the top because they are all in different situations and its ultimately opinion anyway unless/until someone starts winning multiple WS in a short window.

That was two years ago. Last season they finished .500 and 30 games behind the Dodgers.

Looks like their farm regressed a good bit over 2022, at least according to MLB.com.

quote:

18. San Francisco Giants
2022 preseason rank: 11
2021 midseason rank: 8
2021 preseason rank: 11
2020 midseason rank: 13
Top 100 Prospects: Marco Luciano, SS (No. 17); Kyle Harrison, LHP (No. 22)

Though their system has dipped a bit in 2022 with some of the better prospects regressing, the Giants still have a pair of high-end talents in Luciano and Harrison. They've also had some farmhands take huge steps forward, such as Grant McCray, Eric Silva, Vaun Brown and Mason Black.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just don't look at them and think they "might be the smartest ran team in the sport right now".

I like a lot of what the Giants have done, especially on the pitching front, but it needs to translate into consistent regular season success before they’re put up there

Tampa for sure gets my vote until proven otherwise

Which is why I said "it will become apparent over the next 2 or 3 years".

Dealing with the Dodgers and frankly also the Padres now in division is tough, I think they did a good job even last year when you look at their roster. How many 2022 Giants position players start for the 2022 Dodgers or 2022 Padres? And TBH the same could have been said when they won the division, at least about the Dodgers vs the Giants rosters.

Fair enough. Your statement just caught me by surprise and since I don't follow the Giants super close and didn't know a lot about their farm, I had to ask.

I don’t get how some of these players work over Management.. good for Correa but that’s an anchor contract

It depends on correas health. If healthy I can see him give a good 5 years before he starts to age. Then its up to the organization to fill out the roster considering their minor leaguers are probably still a good two years away

Considering how badly he fricks over teams with the deals his clients sign, I'm amazed people are still willing to do business with him. And yes, I know he represents the elite of the elite. Just amazes me that teams continue to sign these crazy long deals even though they largely don't work out and they end up stuck in an Albert Pujols or Miguel Cabrera situation.
