Is there any precedent for a team without cap issues to trade their four best players in an 8 month span? I dont think so. All of our star players in the past 5+ years have refused to commit their future to Ottawa because they have either been low-balled and alienated by the ownership over contract negotiations or have (rightfully) believed that the team is not interested in being competitive.

The fact that we have shown a consistent ability to develop players (Alfie, Karlsson, Stone, Hoffman, etc) is overshadowed by the fact that we have an owner who is unwilling to make that final push. Not to mention that backroom staff and all the other regular people who work for the organization have been cut to the bone. Melnyk has driven this organization into the ground and there is no end in sight.
We have been "rebuilding" for basically as long as I remember, and every time we reach a point where we have a talented core of players Melnyk and the rest of the organization blow things up and start again. Karlsson, Stone, and everyone else led us on a surprise run at the Cup two years ago. Then when their contracts were up they all got dealt, forcing all of us to kick our dreams another 5 years down the road. Again.
