What exactly was Peyton’s mistake? KC traded up to the pick before the Saints in order to draft Mahomes.

It’s convenient for Payton to keep repeating this story. It makes him look like he knew Mahomes would be a star. In reality, if he was that convinced, why didn’t he trade up to get him for the Saints? Payton is a fraud.

Obviously KC knew the saints were interested if they had to trade up to grab him at that spot. Maybe Payton’s crew should’ve kept their mouths shut.

The guy took a chance on Drew Brees and hit it big. I think he’ll survive a message board poster not liking his evaluation skills.

That secret trip to see Mahomes wasn't so secret because I remember reading about it before the draft... So I guess the mistake was that someone blabbed and screwed the Saints over...

It wasn't a secret because Mahomes told the Chiefs about it. He revealed on Kelce's podcast that he told the Chiefs about it so they'd move ahead of NO to draft him. He wanted to go to the Chiefs/Reid.

Yeah I mean what were the Saints suppose to do? That is hard to say just trade up in a draft for a guy when no one is expected to draft him and you still have Drew Brees. Just taking him at 11 would have been a big deal with Brees still competing for a title.

Even if the Saints like him on the roster would they have pushed Brees out?

Mahomes preferred Andy Reid over playing for Sean Payton and getting mentored by Drew Brees?

His evaluations over the years were spotty, at best. He wasted three years of Drew Brees' career playing fantasy football by going out and getting the C.J. Spillers and Brandon Browners of the world.

Even as far back as 2007, he was whiffing in personnel evaluations. Jason David ring a bell? Was he the worst in the league? Of course not. But he's not the genius a lot of you like to think he is, especially since he's spent almost 20 years telling you he's a genius.

He had more personnel power than just about any other head coach in the NFL not named Belichick. This has been confirmed over the years by mulitple people who cover the NFL on a regular basis.

Oh well then..

Let us elevate this guy to genius status and shite on Saban for not convincing Miami’s folks hard enough.

Saban took a calculated gamble and whiffed. He's blamed it on the doctors over the years, which is also convenient. But most coaches would have probably looked at Brees' medicals and passed, too. I've always thought he's protested too much about that.

But I don't give Payton much credit for taking that chance. What were his other options? Keeping Aaron Brooks another year? Drafting Vince Young? Matt Leinart? Maybe Jay Cutler?

Saban was over ruled and that's one of the reasons he decided to return to college.

I don't buy that unless Wayne Huizenga told him he couldn't draft him. He was the only guy in the organization who could've trumped Saban. Randy Mueller was the GM, and he recently wrote in an article in The Athletic that he basically worked for Saban.

From Mueller's first-person account last month after Saban's retirement
(headline: Mueller: Being Nick Saban’s GM was far from easy, but he made me (and everyone) better)...

quote:

I remember hearing stories about how hard Nick — who announced his retirement Wednesday after 17 years and six national championships at Alabama — was to work for. And I remember our conversation, before he offered me the job, as we circled his lake on foot at his Baton Rouge, La., home. (He had wanted me to come spend a day with him. What he really wanted was for his wife, Miss Terry, to meet me, size me up and give the OK to hire me.)

“Working for me is not for everybody, Randy,” he said. “I can be hard on people.”

because Payton wouldn't quit running his mouth about how he thought Mahomes had one of the best workouts he'd ever seen from a QB. KC knew Payton would take Mahomes that's why they jumped up
