.520 win % + 0 SB vs .604 win % + 1 SB

Considering the Saints had won 1 playoff game in their entire franchise history prior to Payton, it's difficult to agree that he's an average coach.

quote:Agreed, Payton is probably a top 5 coach but the saints need a change at the top for the betterment of the organization. Some new blood, a new voice calling the shots.
But it also feels like Payton has run his course in New Orleans.

This.
The Saints front office is the issue right now IMO. If we get Drew’s heir apparent on roster to learn for a couple years, we’ll be fine with Payton once Drew is gone due to so much more cap space.

That's a lotta pills and alcohol for CSP.

When you have 2 straight losing seasons and no turning it around in sight, no it wouldn't hurt to bring in a new coach to facilitate a rebuild. Paytons personnel decisions have wasted the last few good years of Brees career.

the whole "new voice" argument is ridiculous. Turn over in the NFL is so fast.
There are like 4 players on the current roster that have been there more than 4 years

He's around a top 5 coach for me, but they need to remove his GM ability. Payton the GM has hurt Payton the Coach in my opinion.

someone with a different blueprint, new philosophy. Someone with a commitment to Defense.

I think he has one more run in him. They have had some terrible drafting in recent years and last year was the first time it feels like they hit pretty well with Jeff Ireland giving his full input on it. Hopefully they continue that here in the next draft to help put the pieces around Brees needed.

When did Jeff Ireland become some sort of genius? This is the same guy that just destroyed the Dolphins.

They'll learn soon enough
I remember when LSU fans loved Gary Crowton that one year and fans from every other place he had been warned us not to get too excited.

I'll take another Super Bowl for the Saints and then whomever ending up being a bust down the road.

He can't do much better without a more talented roster. The FO is failing him.
He needed the last few years to get his ego in check. Hopefully he's learned from them.

he's not our GM, he's more of a draft consultant.

It's hard to dump a coach that is guaranteed to have you a top 10 offense at the least, usually a top 5 offense, and you're teams are always have a chance to win any game based on the offense alone, despite consistently bad defenses.
I do think Payton has been humbled, bringing in a guy like Ireland is a huge step in peeling back some of his power, or at least getting a different voice in the draft room. Because we all know Loomis is a bottom 5 GM in the league and doesn't offer anything in that light. He has been the biggest problem with the Saints for years.

Since they've shed all the awful contracts for mediocre talent maybe, and it's not like the Dolphins are just vomiting success. They have one winning season since 2008 and two 8-8s. It's not like the AFC East is this powerhouse either.
Drafting starters with the 1-4 round picks isn't some sort of fantastic thing when you have that bad a team.
