Let's say there were 64 kids there. Seven coaches would have a draft of 8 rounds (actually probably 7 rounds since every coach had a son in the league), and the 8 un-picked kids were the 8th team. That team got boatraced every game.
this doesn't make any sense
who is coaching these kids? why does this 8th coach get stuck with the shitty kids? why doesn't he get to draft?
what the frick?

When I wasn’t on a school team, my league didn’t have a draft. Players could request to be on a coach’s team. This was almost always kids who went to the same school with the son of the coach.
Everyone else who didn’t select a team was put on a roster based on zip code. My team was about half kids like me who were assigned via zip code and half players who requested the specific team.
I think most teams were like that except for the team that was all Jehovah-Jireh kids. They had a different name back then, I think.
There were no terrible teams in that league. When it came to the school leagues, by far the worst team everyone faced in baseball or basketball was Baton Rouge Lutheran. Those poor kids got mercy ruled by damn near everyone.

It’s tough to tell if you are that committed to trolling or just a complete and total retard

I wonder if the OP is just describing the plot of Mighty Ducks back when they were called District 5.

Nope. I only played a little baseball for about 4 or 5 years as a kid. I seem to remember them testing our skills and then fairly evenly distributing the players. We had a mix of good bad and terrible players.

Why wasn't the 8th team/coach allowed to draft?

I grew up in a small town though, so I know we had coaches do actual drafts, I also participated in a couple when I was 18 and coached as well. Coaches would obviously automatically get to keep their kid or brother, then they were allowed to freeze another player, or something like that.
But from there, it was just a standard draft.

That's usually what happens. they have to beg and borrow a last coach to show up, and that guy gets somehow stuck with the crappy kids.

Are they usually attorneys who have to do court-ordered community service because of DUIs?

Can't say I ever played in a league like this, I just represented my school colors. #SASLions4Lyfe

Ironically, it's always my personal anecdotes that get the most responses accusing me of trolling.

But I have no recollection of who these men were.

Are you watching the Bad News Bears again?

My rec basketball league was really well organized, i thought. Standard "try-out" with some drills and a short scrimmage to give the coaches a chance to rank the players to their own liking.
The wrinkle was that the other coaches in the league graded each coach's son, and the coach had to draft their kid in that round. So, you didn't just automatically get your son who was the best player in the league and another first round pick. If your son was that good, he was your first round pick and then you pick again in round 2. if your son got a 2nd round grade, you picked a first rounder, then your son, then a 3rd rounder. and so on and so forth.
