Can you imagine how many he would have if he had skipped clay court season every year?

I have no doubt his resurgence is PED related.

i mean he's slipped in a few GS wins lately but he was always making semis and finals. it's not like he completely fell off and returned

Fed's issues were pretty much mental. back in the Nadal-Fed heyday, you could see in matches when Nadal broke him

Fed has also changed his game up over the years and was never over-reliant on pure physicality

Good for him but this GOAT phrase is getting out of hand. GOAT this, GOAT that. People so obsessed with GOAT. I mean how do we know if someone doesn’t win 25 grand slam title 500 years from now?

Henry Ford maybe GOAT during his time, but I rather drive a Toyota than a Ford any day.

He’s a nice guy so he gets a pass from the media. If he was a dickhead there would be constant questions about the legitimacy of a guy winning majors at 36.

I remember when Sampras won Wimbledon at 31 and people were saying “holy shite how can he still do it at his age?”

Fed turns 37 in August.

You have to be a self-promoting jackass to get media attention.

Lavar Ball has gotten more attention in one year than he had in 18.

I would not be surprised in the slightest if any tennis player tested positive for PEDs, even Federer. That said, like SFP pointed out, he has been in the mix all along. These titles last year and this year are due to Djokovic falling off, racquet change, strategy adjustments against Rafa, and serving like a beast.

agree 100%

tennis players and cyclists are always suspect

even if he is using, all of his opponents are using. Djoker's magical asthma cure and about 100 things about Nadal are much more heavy signals of use than anything Fed has done.

but yeah even when he wasn't winning, he was still well in the mix. i used to post about how that may mean more for his GOAT status than just he pure # of GS titles. but then of course after i start making that argument he boinks off 2 more GSs

Fed is definitely one of those guys that I think is old as hell...then I realize he's 8 months younger than me.

This is true...Fed isn't the biggest at anything - definitely not the biggest serve or FH which can get one a long, long way at this game - but he does have the courage to play closer to the net than anyone else. Look at hawkeye data on where he strikes the ball relative to the baseline, and you will see that he has unlocked the formula that very few players in this age have the courage (and perhaps skill??) to execute.

Feds serve is incredibly difficult to read. His toss is the same for wide and down the “T” serves He has excellent placement which I think is more important that overall speed. Look what he has done to roddick and others over the years. Also he ranks second in all time aces. He game is just so fluid and appears effortless. You can find player interviews where they say he doesn’t everything perfectly and the speed his game is very quick. I think his lack of loud grunting tricks people into thinking he isn’t an aggressive player.

So glad Fed won these last three and probably isn't done. I'd kill myself if that shitbag Nadal ended up with the most majors.

Fed's issues were 0% mental. That guy was playing in the 18 and unders the last time he doubted himself on a tennis court.

It's definitely physical.

I really don't want to open up the whole PEDs can of worms, because there's just nowhere to go with the discussion because we don't really know. But if you're somebody who has speculated about Djoker or Rafa in the past, and you aren't speculating about Fed...its' just because you really like him.

Because the 2011-2015 Roger Federer was normal. There's no shortage of historical context for a guy getting into his 30s and not winning anymore.

Thre's zero precedent of whcih i'm aware for a guy taking six months off nd then coming back at entering into a second prime at 36. If there is a better analog than Barry Bonds, then offer it up.

But i don't know, and either way he's great at tennis. Just saying it isn't unreasonable to think that there could be some chemistry involved.

Been saying this for years.

Only Millenials use it and only Millenials born from the mid-90's. Basically adults under 25.

The problem with the phrase...people have taken an old drunken bar argument on a Friday night and turned it into something that means anything? Nothing.

Who cares? You can't define it, your opponent in argument can't define it...nobody can define it...nobody can qualify it and nobody can quantify it.

It's like saying, hey man, what's the best star in the sky? What's the best river in the US ever? What's the best Mountain to ever climb ever? What's the best Ice Cream like ever? Best ever Ice Cream?

What's the best couch ever (or TV) that you own and will soon be obsolete in 25 years...along with everything else you own.

You think people are going to have this stupid declaration in 25 years?

Borg was GOAT, then MAC...hell within his lifetime Fed had a major challenger to GOAT in Nadal.

You think GOAT is going to mean anything in 25 years for him? He'll be old news. Just like Connors, Mac and Borg.

This has to be said:

His rise correlates with the decline of World Wide Tennis.

Connors and Borg and Mac made tennis popular again. So they didn't have it difficult either.

90's guys were the children of the 80's tennis boom.

Playing Pro in the 90's must have been as difficult as its ever been. The Pros were brutal. Agassi would have had a much better career in today's era. He played against people and players during the height of tennis.

All these kids being forced a racket in their hand from the late 70's and the cool thing to do play tennis like eating fondue.

Every kid in the late 80's (even if they had no money) was playing tennis. Everyone.

Then Tennis died in the late 90's - everyone quit and Fed took over a talentless tour.
