False

Faldo wouldn’t have told the R&A if it was Rory.

I think they ask him about it and have him recreate the shot at the least.
There is no world where you can go flatten that clump of grass. There just isn’t. That was no different than bending a limb that might ride your shaft(lol) during the back and through swing.
You can’t do that.
I guess the only argument is that it was far enough back that he didn’t think his club would be affected.
When talking to the official, he leans back and grabs the whole clump. That shite was way more vertical when I did it, I think. He flattened it to make a swing.

When assessing your lie, wouldn’t it be typical to have a club in hand and slowly take your back swing to see if you can make a swing?
It’s certainly not typical to go up there and start tamping down the thick grass directly behind your golf ball

100% of professional golfers with a caddie walk in to see that lie and figure out the shot they need to hit before grabbing a club.

I played professional golf. Multiple USGA amateur events…. What he did he did knowing it was only helping him. That was a penalty all day long.

In hindsight, he would be better off if his ball had ended up in that muddy puddle.

Do we live in a time where adderall has fried peoples brains so much we have no memory over a few months ?
Tiger, who is 100000x more popular than Rory can dream to be l, was twice , TWICE, penalized based on video form people calling in very controversial penalties

His practice swings were brushing the grass after he stomped it. It was in play.

Whatever dumbass rule that caused him to be penalized is, needs to be abolished.
Who gives a frick if you flatten grass behind your ball.
Its not like he is digging a trench on the green for the ball to ride in towards the hole.
Up there with game suspensions for targeting in college football for dumbest rule in sports

I wouldn’t t be surprised if the R&A let it slide if it was Rory, or Tommy Fleetwood, or another local favorite. We’ll never know.
However, Bryson opened himself up to scrutiny and a penalty by his actions. There’s no one to blame but himself. His true intentions don’t matter. Stomping down the fescue around his ball raised enough suspicion that a penalty was assessed.

I go back and forth. Learning this infraction has only been called once in 30 years at the Open makes it a little more odd. Obviously this similar walk around the ball has happened many many times with no penalty.

How many times has the masters in their history used video to penalize someone for a bad drop? The answer is only once ever, Yet they did it to a tiger
How many times in the history of the pga championship have they penalized someone for grounding their club in the bunker? The answer again is only once ever, Yet they did it to DJ
The only thing that has made this such a big deal is Bryson childlike reaction. The video is clear as day what he did intentional or not it doesn’t matter
The other two golfers above took their penalty with class, Bryson didn’t and chose to say ridiculous things like he wouldn’t play

Can’t wait till we get a bunch of videos of players doing something similar throughout the years.. I just can’t fathom applying this rule in that spot.
