Saw Mr. Hornung many times in the club room at Keeneland dropping major cash and many mixed drinks during the day. He enjoyed the trac and the horses!
RIP to the Golden Boy.

I know there was a fierce recruiting war for em.

RIP. I could tell during Joe Burrow's Heisman ceremony that he was not looking good.
We were at a bar in South Bend the night before the LSU - Notre Dame game in 1998. Hornung was in there holding court like the celebrity he was. I was with some friends who were family friends of Jimmy Taylor's. When Hornung found this out he struck up a conversation with us and we ended up hanging out with him a good part of the night.
Great guy. He will be missed.

He used to sneak out after curfew, party all night, then come play his NFL game

Wasn’t he the crypt keeper at Burrows Heisman ceremony?

And he said Lombardi asked him "do you want to be a Playboy or a football player?"
And Hornung said he replied "I want to be a Playboy!"

He was the only one who could get away with stuff like that with Lombardi. Deep down the strict and straight laced Lombardi wished he could have been more like the Golden Boy.

He and former Packers WR Max McGee were notorious for this. The night before the first Super Bowl, McGee broke curfew and got hammered, because he wasn't expected to play. He had to go in after starting WR Boyd Dowler got hurt and caught 2 TDs while playing hung over. I can only imagine those two playing in New Orleans during the Saints' early days.

Still holds the record for scoring...... Points per game, that is, single season.
