It seems from the article implied it was too many left hooks and right crosses.

He really didn’t seem like a guy in his 50s. It’s an absolutely brutal sport and profession.

More to do with getting "cracked" on the jaw too many times over his career. He definitely suffered from pugilistic dementia or what old timers called "punch drunk".

Lots of great fighters wind up that way in their lifetime. Greats like Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Jerry Quarry, Freddie Roach, Meldrick Taylor, Tommy Hearns, just to name a few.

On the local scene here in N.O., middleweight boxer Tony Licata who campaigned in the 70's to 90's also suffered from this horrible affliction. He fought Carlos Monzon for the Middleweight Title in Madison Square Garden and lost by KO, but went on to have an impressive record of 60-7-4 before retiring.

Not a good 2020 start for "Black Mamba's"...

Just saying!

Football rightly is concerned with head trauma.

In boxing that is an important goal.

Here's the thing with boxers. Most of the better boxers start early in life in the ring, often boxing many bouts in the amateur ranks before turning pro. Two come to mind for long amateur careers----Lomachanko's amateur record is 396-1 and Rigondeaux's is an impressive 463-12. Seems Eastern European and Cuban boxers often have way more amateur fights than the average American.

Well, to prepare for all those bouts requires hours and hours of round after round of sparring. Even though sparring is done with larger, more padded gloves than what they wear on fight night, and the boxers wear head gear to help cushion the blows, it is still concussive trauma happening every time they get hit in the head, just to a lesser degree.

Even with those precautions, boxers will still sometimes get KO'd sparring, especially against guys in the upper weight divisions. Mike Tyson was notorious for going through sparring partners, as were many heavy handed heavyweight fighters---George Foreman, Ron Lyle, Ernie Shavers, Rocky Marciano, etc.

Who knows how many times a boxer takes punches to the head over the course of his boxing career between sparring the actual boxing matches.

I recently saw a video about Wilfredo Benitez who became the youngest to ever capture a World Title when he won the World Super Lightweight Title at age 17 and beat Antonio Cervantes, a future Hall of Fame boxer. Wilfredo started boxing pro at age 15.

For the past several years he's basically a vegetable, unable to move on his own or even talk. He needs 24 hour care to survive. Sad ending for such a great fighter who was a joy to watch in his prime who is now 61 years old.

Floyd will probably be the only boxer that will not decline late in his life because he never got hit

Don't know about that. There's a bunch of boxers out there who are still sharp and have been retired for years.

Sugar Ray Leonard
Oscar De La Hoya
Marvin Hagler
Roberto Duran
Larry Holmes
Mike Tyson
Lennox Lewis
Ricky Hatton
Naseem Hamed
Both Klitschko brothers, and many more

I can see Manny Pacquaio being OK and he was in some wars

He will have to have knee replacements from all of that running.
