Passed away earlier today at age 85. Great coach, what he accomplished at U of A was remarkable.

Nooooooooo!!!! As a Stanford fan, I loved to hate Lute, but I always respected him.

My condolences to Rep520, if he's still posting.

Point guard U.

Made the Tourney 25 years in a row...2 shy of North Carolina.

Once UCLA collapsed he made WC basketball relevant every year.

Won Pac 10 coach of the year 7 times and made 5 Final Fours.

When Arizona won the Title in 1997, they defeated 3 #1 seeds. A feat no other team has done.

Put together some entertaining as hell teams at Arizona.

Let us never forget the magical run of Miles Simon

I first met coach as an 18 year old on the golf team... one of my freshman teammates was walking ahead of me in McKale and I yelled an expletive at him referencing his Korean heritage... as I turned the corner I see Stuart Scott interviewing Lute on an ESPN special... they both stare at me with their mouths open because clearly the mics were hot and they were pissed!

I get called out of my ECON 101 class at 9AM and told by my golf coach to head to coach’s office...

Never will forget the convo we had and he and I became good friends up until the end.

What a guy

+1 he should've won more than one. He had some really strong teams.

He might have won back to back if Rick Majerus hadn’t busted out the triangle and 2. And probably would have won in ‘03 if Kirk Hinrich hadn’t played a hell of a game in the Elite 8.

Did a good job at Iowa, too. Not entirely sure, but I think he got them to the FF once and close other times.

The only time I've ever been bumped/deboarded flying standby, was with an LSU chum headed to LA to visit our friend. On stop in Phoenix, our names are announced to get off..and on walks Lute & Bobbi Olsen to take our seats. We laughed, and caught the next SWA 45 minutes later.

Great HC, loved Zona Hoops in 1980s & 1990s. Did great at Iowa too.

2000-2001 was his best team, IMO. Jefferson, Arenas, et Al. Got beat by the only better team that season.

My favorite coach. I grew up wanting to be Bibby and Miles Simon and wanting to play at Point Guard U.

Interesting note, in the 1997 NCAA final OT - only two FGs were made - both by Kentucky a 2 point and a 3.

And Kentucky lost by 5 points.

They sort of went full thug in OT...10 more fouls could've been called on them but they kept sending Arizona to the line for 5 minutes...costing them a repeat.

I think Pitino gambled on the refs swallowing the whistle and it almost paid off as there were some muggings that weren't called.

Lute's team stayed classy.

I remember Billy Packer with a very fitting quote as the seconds ticked down in the title game with Kentucky.

"Simon says championship".

1980 final 4, last time Iowa has been at that place and way too long ago... only reason he left Iowa City is because we are a "fishbowl" college town and he is right... every move you make is judged by the liberal dems in town, glad I live 20 miles north!
