Non pitcher...he is my #1 pick.
Only options at #1 are Babe, Ohtani or Bonds if we are including steroids era.
I’d hear Ted Williams too because he lost some prime years to the war and I think gets slightly underrated as a result.

Rickey don’t wanna hear about no John 3:16
Was John the dude that was on Rickey's team that wore a batting helmet while playing firstbase?

Between the harder throwing pitchers and what I’d imagine are quicker pop times for catchers, I’d be curious to see any data available comparing the times required to steal a base on average in today’s game versus when Ricky was creating havoc

Mays is the greatest overall position player who ever lived. And Williams is the best hitter who ever lived.
I’d still take Rickey with the first pick.
Because who says I must pick the GOATs over everyone else?
For example, I absolutely concede that Johnny Bench is the greatest catcher who ever lived. I’m taking Yogi for my imaginary team. Partly just because, but mostly because he knew how to win. And I think I’d do all right.

Harder throwing pitchers ?
You act like pitchers in the 70s/80s/90s had 80mph fastballs.
You think that catchers today are more skilled at gunning down runners than Bench, Pudge, and Santiago?
Rickey Henderson retired after the 2003 season, not the 1933 season.
The advantages I listed in the OP dwarf any miniscule additional difficulty created by the average pitcher today allegedly throwing slightly hard than 30 years ago.

I’m choosing Ohtani over anyone if we are competing under the modern game. He’s a freak batter and pitcher and we know he can hit 100mph fastballs consistently
I just saw a video that said Ohtani ran a 4.13 forty, at 6'-4", 210. He's unreal.

John Olerud, and it was hilarious reading this.
MLB.com
Apparently it was an assistant trainer that made up the story, but it became an urban legend, likely because of how Henderson’s personality was.
quote:
For those unaware, the story goes like this: When Henderson signed with Olerud's Mariners in 2000, he came up to Olerud and asked about the helmet the first baseman always wore in the field. After learning the reason -- Olerud suffered an aneurysm in college, and wore the helmet to protect his head -- Henderson said, "Man, I played with someone like that in New York."
And Olerud's response: "Yeah, Rickey, that was me."
Long thought to be apocryphal, the story was explained by Olerud.

I guess he and Olerud were teammates for a while with Toronto but the quote was referring to something Rickey said about the John 3:16 signs that were ubiquitous in the 80s.

I recall him being a pretty solid lead off hitter as well
Posted on 7/3/23 at 5:39 pm to Fishing Fanatic
The best part about him was how he continually referred to himself in the 3rd person. The Yankees used to play UF in an exhibition game all the time during spring training because Steinbrenner like UF. One year someone swiped Henderson's shoes. When asked about it he said, 'Someone stole Ricky's shoes.'

Other than stealing bases
Stealing bases gets you in scoring position. Not exactly insignificant.

Was that a typo or sarcasm regarding 4.13 forty ?

Hyperbole.
Bo Jackson fans swear he ran a 4.13 as well.

The best lead off hitter in history and it’s not close.
Posted on 7/3/23 at 6:44 pm to Fishing Fanatic
Without looking it up idk how many stolen bases he normally gets every year, but I imagine he'd get 100+ a year today.

Neither. The video made it a point to say Ohtani had a faster time than Deion Sanders & Bo Jackson.

Only guy who I may go after before Ricky is junior.

No, but Ricky Henderson scored fewer runs per 162 games than Ruth or Williams. He did score 10 more runs than Mays but had 44 fewer RBIs.
Henderson was a great player, just not a guy you would objectively select before Ruth, Williams, or Mays.

Agree.
As great as Rickey was, there are a whole bunch of guys that I would take before Rickey.
Plus Rickey was a defensive liability with a rag arm.
